Last night’s KFC BBL|13 clash between the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars at the SCG marked a historic moment for Gerard Abood, who became the first umpire to stand in 100 BBL fixtures.

This milestone contributes to an illustrious list of umpiring achievements for Abood, including:

  • 1 Test Match | Australia Women v England Women at North Sydney Oval in 2017
  • 11 One Day Internationals | 2 men’s and 9 women’s
  • 20 T20 Internationals | 9 men’s and 11 women’s
  • 81 men’s First-Class matches including the 2017-18 Sheffield Shield final
  • 58 men’s List A matches including the 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2022-23 One Day Cup final
  • On field umpire for 2018-19 and 2019-20 BBL finals
  • 8 NSW Premier Cricket Belvidere Cup finals

Having joined the National Umpire Panel in season 2009-10, Abood is now in his 15th year of service. During which time he has earned the opportunity to umpire first-class cricket in India, New Zealand, and South Africa as part of umpire exchange programs organised by Cricket Australia.

Gerard is also a member of the Cricket Australia Umpire Leadership Group, elected by his peers. A measure of respect he has earned and the esteem in which he is held.

Cricket NSW Head of Competitions and Officiating, Darren Goodger, offered commendation and congratulations to Abood for his accomplishments both on and off the field.

“Gerard Abood is an outstanding person and umpire. Respected by his colleagues and the players for his knowledge, professionalism and ability, Gerard is one of the most trusted umpires in Australia,” Goodger said.

“He is a strong match official going about his work with an emphasis on the umpiring team, and with character and integrity.

“Gerard has also made an exemplary contribution to cricket away from the field being a long serving Assistant Code of Conduct Commissioner for the Sydney Cricket Association, being very generous with his time and expertise.

“Umpiring 100 BBL matches is an exceptional milestone and achievement, with Gerard having plenty more in front of him. We offer congratulations to Gerard wishing him and the team the very best for an enjoyable and successful match.”
