Australian superstar Steve Smith has been announced as the latest signing for Cricket NSW partner, Washington Freedom, ahead of the second season of Major League Cricket (MLC).

Smith is set to join forces with recently announced head coach Ricky Ponting and Freedom’s General Manager of Cricket Michael Klinger, when the second edition of the competition kicks off in the United States later this year.

Smith will also be joined in Washington by New Zealand young gun, Rachin Ravindra, who was announced by the franchise earlier this week.

Speaking about his signing with the Washington team, Smith said he was looking forward to heading stateside.

“I’m super excited about joining the Washington Freedom. I can’t wait to meet all of my new teammates and play in front of some incredible crowds in America.

“I’m also really looking forward to working with Ricky Ponting again and his amazing staff. I can’t wait for the season.”

Cricket NSW is the high-performance partner of Washington Freedom and is responsible for building a high-performance environment including player contracting and management, implementing a top-class coaching team and other high-performance roles, including sports science and sports medicine, performance analysis and team operations.

The second season of Major League Cricket is set to begin in July.
