The Brisbane Heat and Queensland Cricket have celebrated champions past and present with the unveiling of Champions Corner today at Allan Border Field.
Members of the Heat and the Queensland Fire’s inaugural winning women’s teams were on hand this morning to unveil the tribute to the triumphant 2013-14 QLD Fire WT20, 2018-19 Heat WBBL, and 2020-21 WNCL teams, while also launching this week’s Weber Women’s Big Bash League season.
Today’s launch also marked the announcement of Australian Cricket’s inaugural Women and Girls Week that will take place nationally next month.
Champions Corner is one of the new landmarks at the recently renovated Allan Border Field and features an honour board of all members of Queensland’s first female title winning teams across major domestic competitions.
Queensland Cricket and Brisbane Heat CEO Terry Svenson paid tribute to the contributions and success of each champion player and squad.
“Champions Corner is an incredibly important tribute and opportunity to celebrate the trailblazing teams Queensland has produced.
“From our drought breaking Fire side that won our first ever domestic title in 2014, through to our back-to-back Heat champions and our WNCL title in 2021, we have some cherished memories of our teams and players claiming trophies for our many fans across the state and country.
“Allan Border Field is the home of the Brisbane Heat and Queensland Fire, so we want to create a space where when young boys and girls come and watch their heroes play and be reminded of the champions that have gone before them and be inspired to pull on the teal and maroon.
“To our Heat squad preparing for their season kicking off this week, we wish you all the best of luck. We’re looking forwarding to being greeted by big crowds and plenty of teal in Mackay and back here at AB Field in a few weeks.”
The Heat launch WBBL|08 on Thursday night at Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay this week with the competition’s opening fixture against the Sydney Sixers.
Five teams will land in Mackay this week for four days of WBBL action, with the Heat also featuring on Saturday night and Tuesday afternoon October 18.
Thursday’s opener will be live on Channel Seven, Fox Cricket and Kayo, with tickets available from $5 for kids and $10 for adults through Ticketek.
Today’s launch also marked the announcement of Australian Cricket’s inaugural Women and Girls Week.
Scheduled to run throughout the Weber WBBL|08 Finals series from November 21-27, the week will celebrate the vast contribution of cricket’s amazing female volunteers, coaches, officials, players and administrators.
Australian Cricket’s inaugural celebration of women and girls in the game will showcase the people and initiatives that ensure the women’s game goes from strength to strength.
Throughout Women and Girls Week, the game will celebrate past and present cricketers at an elite and grassroots level, volunteers, coaches, umpires and administrators.
By aligning to the WBBL|08 Finals, the week will demonstrate the links between the WBBL competition, which inspires more girls to play cricket, and the grassroots clubs and volunteers that make that happen.
The Heat travel to Mackay tomorrow to prepare for the season opening games.
