Alex Hales, who retired from international cricket in 2023, will not be playing for Nottinghamshire this season, marking the end of his 18-year association with the county. The England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) recent stance on granting No Objection Certificates (NOCs) has played a key role in his departure, as they have decided not to permit centrally contracted players—either by the ECB or counties—to participate in overseas leagues.
At 36, Hales has opted to prioritize franchise cricket, seeking lucrative opportunities abroad rather than playing in England’s domestic competitions like the T20 Blast and The Hundred, where he represented Trent Rockets.
He has signed a multi-league deal with Knight Riders Sports, committing to play for Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket (MLC) and Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Additionally, there is potential for him to participate in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) and the upcoming European T20 Premier League.
Reflecting on his time at Nottinghamshire, Hales expressed gratitude for his years at the club. “The last 18 years playing at Trent Bridge for Notts have been an absolute pleasure, and it remains my favourite place in the world to play cricket. Some of my best memories have come in a Notts shirt, and some of my closest friendships in the game have been made in that home dressing room,” he stated.
He further added, “Having spent more and more time playing around the world in recent years, heading back to Trent Bridge has always been something I’ve looked forward to. But given the current landscape of the global game as well as having recently moved abroad, unfortunately, I won’t be able to return this season… Hopefully, I will be able to return at some point in the future.”
With the franchise cricket circuit expanding rapidly, Hales’ move underscores the growing appeal of global T20 leagues over traditional county commitments.
