Bangladesh set to host Asia Cup 2027 as ODI tournament window takes shape ahead of World Cup

Bangladesh is expected to retain hosting rights for the six-team competition, with the 50-over tournament reportedly scheduled from June 18 to July 4 as part of preparations for the 2027 Men's ODI World Cup.

Bangladesh is set to host the 2027 Asia Cup, with the tournament expected to take place from June 18 to July 4 in the ODI format, according to reports. The proposed schedule would position the competition just a few months before the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, giving Asia’s leading teams a valuable opportunity to fine-tune their preparations ahead of cricket’s biggest 50-over event.

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is understood to have agreed on the proposed tournament window, although an official announcement confirming the schedule, venues and fixtures is still awaited.

Asia Cup to serve as key World Cup build-up

The 2027 edition is expected to feature six teams and 13 matches, with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan joined by one qualifying Associate nation.

With the ODI World Cup set to be staged later in the year across South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, the Asia Cup is expected to play an important role in helping participating teams finalise combinations and assess their squads under competitive conditions.

Bangladesh expected to retain hosting rights

The reports suggest Bangladesh will remain the host despite recent uncertainty over whether it could lose the tournament because of strained cricketing relations with India.

Questions over the hosting arrangements emerged following several developments during the past year, including issues linked to the 2026 Indian Premier League, where Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was removed from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad, Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the T20 World Cup in India, with Scotland subsequently replacing them, and the postponement of India’s scheduled bilateral tour of Bangladesh from its original dates. The bilateral series could still take place later this year.

Despite that backdrop, Bangladesh is now expected to stage the tournament as originally planned.

Venues and playing conditions under discussion

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has reportedly been asked to identify at least three venues for the competition, with Dhaka, Sylhet and Chattogram emerging as the leading candidates.

The Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur is expected to host the final.

Pitch preparation is also understood to be a major focus during planning, with the ACC reportedly seeking surfaces that offer greater pace and bounce to better reflect the conditions teams are likely to encounter during the ODI World Cup in southern Africa later that year.

The ACC and the Bangladesh Cricket Board are yet to formally confirm the tournament schedule, venue allocation and complete fixture list.
