BCB addresses India U19 no-handshake incident with official clarification

A moment of tension unfolded before the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026 clash between India and Bangladesh when the two captains did not exchange the customary handshake at the toss — a scene that quickly went viral and sparked controversy across social platforms.

The incident occurred at the Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo, where Bangladesh’s vice-captain Zawad Abrar represented the team due to regular skipper Azizul Hakim’s illness. India’s Ayush Mhatre led the opposition. Following the toss, which was delayed by rain, Bangladesh elected to field first. But it was the missing handshake that dominated the headlines, with many connecting it to broader geopolitical tensions between the two nations.

This wasn’t the first time cricket has seen such moments. In recent months, captains from India and Pakistan avoided handshakes in multiple matches during the Asia Cup and Women’s ODI World Cup – and most recently at the U19 Asia Cup in December. Similar diplomatic and cricketing tensions have surrounded Bangladesh’s reluctance to play its 2026 T20 World Cup matches in India, a stance that has only amplified speculation around moments like this.

To contain the narrative, the Bangladesh Cricket Board issued an official statement via Twitter, breaking its silence and directly addressing the growing speculation.

“The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken note of an inadvertent and unwarranted action that occurred at the toss prior to the opening match of the ICC Under 19 World Cup 2026, Zimbabwe & Namibia, between Bangladesh and India,” the statement began, acknowledging the gravity of the moment.

It went on to explain the absence of regular captain Azizul Hakim, clarifying, “Due to illness, regular captain Azizul Hakim was unable to attend the toss, and vice-captain Zawad Abrar represented the team on the occasion.”

Dismissing allegations of deliberate disrespect, the board made its position clear: “The BCB wishes to clarify that the absence of a handshake with the opposition captain was completely unintentional and resulted from a momentary lapse in concentration. There was no intent whatsoever to show discourtesy or disregard towards the opposition,” the statement added.

BCB reaffirms values of respect and fair play

Emphasizing its stance on sportsmanship, the Bangladesh board said it had addressed the issue internally with the team. “The Board has viewed the matter with due seriousness, as upholding the spirit of cricket and respect for opponents is a fundamental prerequisite for representing Bangladesh at any level and immediately advised the team management accordingly,” the statement read.

Players, too, have been reminded of their obligations as representatives of the country. “The players have also been reminded of their responsibility to maintain the highest standards of sportsmanship, camaraderie and mutual respect in all interactions with opposing teams,” the BCB noted.

The clarification aimed to close the chapter on the incident while reaffirming the governing body’s core philosophy. “The Bangladesh Cricket Board remains fully committed to the values of cricket, both on and off the field,” the statement concluded.

Wider tensions elevate a brief lapse

Though the BCB has categorized the incident as accidental, it comes at a time of heightened sensitivities between the two cricketing boards. Bangladesh’s stance on avoiding matches in India during the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the IPL controversy around Mustafizur Rahman’s release from Kolkata Knight Riders have both added fuel to the broader political backdrop.

However, through its immediate and comprehensive response, the BCB has aimed to draw a clear line between an isolated moment and any larger geopolitical narrative — urging fans and stakeholders to judge the action within the boundaries of sport, not politics.
