IMG emerges as frontrunner in BCB’s BPL revamp strategy

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is preparing to finalize a long-term agreement with International Management Group (IMG), the global sports and events powerhouse, as its marketing consultancy partner for the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The move signals a strategic shift in how the BPL is positioned and managed moving forward, with the board aiming to professionalize and scale the tournament.

A BCB director confirmed the development to the Daily Star, stating that IMG—based in New York and with nearly 13 years of IPL experience—is the leading candidate from a shortlist of three firms.

“We have shortlisted three companies, and IMG is the frontrunner. We have asked for a few additional things from them. By tomorrow, we will confirm the matter,” the director said, requesting anonymity.

IPL and PSL model to drive BPL’s transformation

The board is leaning toward a model that mirrors successful franchise tournaments like the IPL and PSL, where the board retains operational control over teams and betting rights—a significant departure from other approaches in the region.

“We are taking services from them. There were two models, we went with the one followed in the IPL and PSL, where the board takes control over the teams and betting,” the director explained. “Sri Lanka took a different path, letting the event management run the show. We want to make BPL the second-best product.”

The decision underscores BCB’s intent to take full control of the BPL’s commercial and operational direction in order to compete at a higher global standard.

A long-term investment to boost BPL’s reputation

BCB officials see the deal with IMG not just as a consultancy arrangement but as a foundational investment in the league’s long-term credibility, financial health, and global appeal. A stable financial pipeline is seen as key to professionalizing team operations, ensuring timely payments, and generating broader interest in the BPL ecosystem.

“We need to invest for two to three years. If we receive the money on time, we can make payments on time, which will create a good vibe around the BPL,” the director said.

Competitive bidding process and final decision imminent

Following the board’s public call for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) on July 10, leading firms across the industry submitted proposals. In total, five entities responded: Apex Sports Consulting, IMG, Real Impact & Absolute Legends Sports, The IPG Group & Mind Tree Limited, and Transports Group. From that pool, three firms were shortlisted, with IMG quickly rising to the top of the list.

The final decision, originally slated for the most recent board meeting, was deferred to resolve a few remaining issues but is expected to be confirmed imminently.
