BCCI calls IPL owners, broadcasters and state associations for key meeting ahead of 2027 milestone season

The October 15 meeting in Mumbai will bring together major IPL stakeholders to review operational challenges, coordinate preparations and discuss plans for the tournament's 20th edition.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has scheduled a joint meeting with Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners, Chief Executive Officers, broadcasters and host state associations in Mumbai on October 15, as preparations begin for the tournament’s landmark 20th edition in 2027, according to a report by Cricbuzz.

The gathering follows the BCCI‘s decision at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) last month to mark the IPL’s two-decade milestone with major celebrations, with the board seeking wider stakeholder participation in preparations for the upcoming season.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the invitations to Cricbuzz, stating: “We have invited all the stakeholders of the IPL, including franchise owners, broadcasters and hosting state associations.”

BCCI outlines plans for the IPL’s milestone season

The BCCI’s general body unanimously approved plans to celebrate the tournament’s 20th season on a grand scale during its AGM in Mumbai last month.

A presentation outlining the anniversary plans was also delivered at the meeting, setting the stage for discussions with the organisations involved in staging and broadcasting the competition.

Saikia linked the stakeholder gathering to that decision, adding: “It is a follow-up to our earlier decision to conduct the next season of the IPL, which will be the 20th edition, on a grand scale.”

The October meeting is expected to include representatives from the 13 state associations that ordinarily host IPL matches, alongside franchise leadership and broadcaster JioStar.

State associations brought into wider IPL discussions

The BCCI has expanded its consultation process to include host state associations, whose representatives were not routinely involved in previous discussions about upcoming IPL seasons.

Earlier planning meetings primarily involved franchise representatives. The broader participation this year will bring together organisations with different responsibilities across the competition, including venue management and broadcasting.

In an official letter to state associations, accessed by The Indian Express, Saikia wrote: “The State Associations play a central role in the successful staging of the League and your perspective on matters of hosting, venue operations, and match-day coordination will be of great value to these deliberations.”

The meeting venue has not yet been formally confirmed. Saikia indicated that several locations had been shortlisted, although Taj Santacruz in Mumbai is understood to be the expected venue for the gathering, scheduled for 6 pm.

BCCI seeks stakeholder input on previous IPL seasons

The board’s communication to stakeholders sets out the scope of the proposed discussions, including the opportunity for participating organisations to raise matters requiring attention.

Saikia outlined the agenda in his letter: “As the league approaches its landmark 20th season in 2027, the BCCI proposes to convene a joint meeting of all key stakeholders, namely the State associations that hosted IPL matches, the Franchise owners and their Chief Executive Officers and the Broadcasters. The meeting is intended to review the issues and learnings from the past seasons, address any concerns and deliberate on the planning and coordination for the 2027 season.”

Impact Player rule decision also approaching

Separately, the BCCI is expected to consider the future of the IPL’s Impact Player rule in the coming weeks, following criticism from Indian captains and franchise coaches.

The regulation, which allows teams to introduce a substitute during matches, has faced opposition over its implications for team combinations and the development of all-rounders.

A decision could be made before the retention deadline is announced ahead of the IPL mini-auction, which is expected to take place in the final week of December.

The Impact Player rule has not been specifically identified as an agenda item for the October 15 stakeholder meeting.

The immediate next step in preparations for the IPL’s 20th season is the Mumbai gathering, where franchise management, broadcasters and host associations have been invited to contribute to the planning process for 2027.
