Uncertainty around leadership continuity has resurfaced in Indian cricket’s selection setup despite a period of sustained white-ball success. The focus has now shifted firmly onto timelines rather than speculation.
The Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) has clarified that Ajit Agarkar has not sought an extension as Chairman Of Selectors, with any decision on his future to be taken only after his current term ends in September 2026, according to a report by PTI.

Recent discussions suggested Agarkar had approached the board to continue through to the ODI World Cup 2027, but those claims have been dismissed internally.
Clarifying the structure and process, a senior BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity, “The selection panel is a sub-committee of the BCCI and the selectors’ contract runs till September this year,” underlining that the existing agreement remains in force without any interim changes.
The same official indicated that there is no procedural need for any proactive request from the Chairman Of Selectors, reinforcing that the process will only move forward once the current term concludes.
Contract timeline to dictate Agarkar’s future role
Agarkar, who assumed the role in 2023, saw his tenure extended by one year in 2025 following India’s ICC trophy wins, placing his current end date in September 2026.
With the ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027, the timing of his contract has naturally triggered questions about continuity. However, the decision framework remains unchanged.
“Ajit’s contract ends in September and after that BCCI Secretary and Ajit will have to decide whether he would continue till next year’s ODI World Cup. A senior selector can continue up to four years as per the constitution, and he doesn’t need to seek an extension,” the official explained, indicating that any continuation would be a mutual decision rather than a formal extension request.
IPL to serve as key evaluation window for World Cup planning
While leadership clarity will come later, operational planning is already underway, with selectors closely monitoring a defined pool of players ahead of the ODI World Cup.
Approximately 20 players have been identified as part of the core group, with the Indian Premier League expected to play a central role in performance tracking. The five-member panel, comprising SS Das, RP Singh, Ajay Ratra, and Pragyan Ojha alongside Agarkar, will divide on-ground responsibilities across venues.
Explaining the approach, the official said, “The BCCI is looking at each selector watching at least one game per week which covers five games per week from the venue. Else obviously they can track on TV,” outlining a structured system of live scouting supplemented by remote analysis.
The emphasis is expected to remain on established ODI players, with fitness and consistency being monitored closely rather than expanding the pool based on short-term IPL performances.
Agarkar’s tenure defined by transition and bold selection calls
Since taking charge, Agarkar has overseen a significant transition phase, particularly in Test cricket following the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
His tenure has also been marked by decisive calls, including leaving out Shubman Gill from the T20 World Cup squad due to form concerns and bringing Ishan Kishan back into contention after a prolonged absence.
In white-ball cricket, the results have been emphatic, with India securing the T20 World Cup 2024, Champions Trophy 2025, and T20 World Cup 2026 titles. However, performances in the Test format have been less consistent, including home series defeats against New Zealand and South Africa.

Despite scrutiny in certain areas, Agarkar has retained strong backing from within the team setup following India’s latest global success.
India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, speaking to reporters at a post-match press conference after the T20 World Cup 2026 triumph, said, “Ajit Agarkar takes a lot of flak, but the honesty with which he has worked has been incredible,” highlighting the internal confidence in his leadership approach.
With contract timelines now clearly defined, the coming months are set to determine whether Agarkar continues to lead India’s selection strategy into the next ODI cycle.
