BCCI postpones IPL stakeholders meeting as PM Modi’s Asian Games felicitation disrupts 2027 planning

The board has deferred its October 15 gathering of franchise owners, executives, broadcasters and host state associations, citing a scheduling conflict and requests from participants. A new date has yet to be announced.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has postponed a major Indian Premier League (IPL) stakeholders meeting scheduled for October 15 in Mumbai, disrupting preparations for the competition’s landmark 20th season in 2027, according to a report by Cricbuzz journalist Vijay Tagore.

The decision comes as senior BCCI officials are required to attend a ceremony hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to honour India’s Asian Games gold-medal-winning cricket teams. Requests from several invited stakeholders to reschedule the meeting also contributed to the decision.

The gathering had been arranged for 6 pm on Thursday at the Taj Santacruz hotel, with IPL franchise owners, Chief Executive Officers, broadcasters and representatives of 13 host state associations expected to attend.

BCCI confirms postponement to franchise owners and broadcasters

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia informed the participating organisations of the change in an email circulated on Tuesday, October 13.

Saikia wrote: “This is to inform you that the meeting with the IPL Franchise Owners, CEOs, IPL Hosting State Associations and Broadcasters, scheduled to be held on October 15, 2026, in Mumbai, has been postponed.”

The board has not announced when the meeting will be reconvened. Its postponement leaves a planned opportunity for the league’s principal commercial and operational stakeholders to discuss the upcoming season on hold.

The BCCI also acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the change and expressed appreciation for the participants’ cooperation.

Prime Minister’s ceremony changes BCCI and player schedules

The Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams are due to be honoured by Prime Minister Modi on October 15 following their gold-medal-winning performances at the 20th Asian Games.

In the official communication, Saikia explained: “The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India is scheduled to felicitate the Indian men’s and women’s teams for their outstanding performances at the recently concluded 20th Asian Games on October 15, 2026, in New Delhi. Accordingly, BCCI officials will be required to attend the felicitation ceremony.”

The event has also affected the travel itinerary of India’s men’s team during its ongoing T20I series against the West Indies.

The players were initially expected to fly directly from Hyderabad to Bengaluru following the fourth T20I on October 14. Instead, they are scheduled to travel to New Delhi on October 15 before continuing to Bengaluru, where the fifth and final match of the series is scheduled for October 17.

Stakeholder requests contribute to rescheduling decision

The BCCI’s decision also reflects scheduling concerns raised by some of the organisations invited to the Mumbai gathering.

Saikia wrote: “Additionally, requests have been received from various stakeholders seeking a postponement of the meeting. In view of the above, and with a view to facilitating maximum participation in person, it has been decided to postpone the meeting. The revised date and venue will be communicated in due course.”

The board has not identified the stakeholders who sought a delay or provided an indication of when the consultation might be rescheduled.

IPL’s milestone season remains the focus of planned discussions

The postponed meeting was intended to support preparations for the IPL’s 20th edition in 2027, bringing together organisations involved in the competition’s management, commercial operations and match hosting.

As previously reported by cricexec on October 12, the BCCI had broadened its consultation process to include state associations that host IPL matches, alongside franchise leadership and broadcasters.

The proposed discussions were expected to address operational lessons from previous seasons, concerns raised by stakeholders and coordination requirements for the next edition.

The participation of host associations represented a departure from earlier planning arrangements, which had primarily involved franchise representatives. Their inclusion would allow venue management and match-day operations to be considered alongside the priorities of teams and broadcasters.

The BCCI’s preparations for 2027 also include plans to celebrate the IPL’s two-decade milestone. Those plans received approval at the board’s Annual General Meeting in Mumbai last month, where a presentation on the proposed celebrations was delivered.

Separately, the board is expected to decide whether to retain the Impact Player rule, which has faced criticism from Indian captains and franchise coaches.

A decision is anticipated before the player retention deadline is announced ahead of the IPL mini-auction, expected in the final week of December. However, the rule has not been confirmed as a specific item for discussion at the postponed stakeholders meeting.

With the October 15 gathering deferred, the BCCI must now identify a suitable date to bring the participating organisations together as preparations continue for the IPL’s milestone season.
