The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended heartfelt congratulations to Rohit Sharma following his announcement to retire from Test cricket, marking the end of a legendary red-ball career that spanned over a decade.
Rohit, who debuted in 2013 and later became the 35th captain of the Indian Test team, played 67 matches, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57. His record includes 12 centuries and a career-best 212. He will continue to represent India in ODIs, stepping away from both Tests and T20Is.
From middle-order talent to world-class Test opener
Rohit Sharma’s Test journey was defined by evolution and adaptability. Initially a middle-order batsman, he reinvented himself to become one of the most successful openers in modern Test cricket. Known for blending classical technique with attacking instincts, his ability to thrive at the top of the order was a key asset for India.
He led India in 24 Tests, guiding the team through injury setbacks and generational transitions, securing 12 wins during his captaincy tenure. His leadership style was marked by calmness, tactical clarity, and a strong team-first mindset.
BCCI leadership pays tribute to Rohit’s legacy
Roger Binny, President of the BCCI, praised Rohit’s contributions to Indian cricket:
“Mr Rohit Sharma’s impact on Indian cricket transcends records and statistics. He brought a sense of calm and assurance to the team – both as a player and as a captain.
