“The need of formulation of norms for IPL victory celebration will be discussed during the meeting.”
A separate board source told ANI,
“BCCI will call an apex council meeting on June 14 to discuss the IPL celebration and formulate new norms. The meeting could be held virtually.”
BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia also condemned the tragedy and emphasized that even though the event was privately organized, the board cannot disown responsibility when it involves cricket-related gatherings. He has promised actionable guidelines to prevent future incidents.
Government and board blame game: questions over accountability
In the aftermath, the Karnataka government told the High Court that RCB and BCCI had not secured official permission for the June 4 event, and alleged that the organisers had effectively “invited the whole world” through their social media promotions.
The event was expected to be controlled via entry passes, but the situation spiraled when tens of thousands more showed up than anticipated. The originally planned celebratory parade from Vidhana Soudha to the stadium — which had been flagged by Bengaluru Traffic Police — was eventually canceled, but the crowd still surged, leading to deadly consequences.
On June 6, RCB marketing head Nikhil Sosale was arrested, and the franchise has since announced ex gratia payments of ₹10 lakh to each victim’s family. Still, the criticism has remained focused on lack of coordination between the franchise, the state, and cricketing authorities.
