The Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to review the Impact Player rule after the conclusion of IPL 2026, as discussions around its influence on match dynamics and team strategy continue to gather momentum. Speaking to reporters at the BCCI headquarters on Saturday, Secretary Devajit Saikia outlined the board’s current stance while confirming that any decision will be taken only after the tournament ends.
BCCI holds position on rule amid ongoing debate
Saikia said, “Some low-scoring matches are also there. All the fans are enjoying the matches. The bowlers are getting good wickets as well. Some teams are scoring very low totals too if you look at the overall scorecards, and some teams are chasing 260 also. Everything is happening it is a full bouquet in one package.”
He added, “This discussion on the rule has been going on for the last two years. We will review it after this tournament is over, and in the middle of the tournament, we cannot take any call.”
The rule, introduced to allow tactical substitutions during matches, has significantly altered team composition by enabling sides to adjust between batting and bowling strength depending on match situations.
No formal push from franchises yet
Saikia said, “There is no official request that we should revisit this particular Impact Player proposition. It is in the media that I sometimes read it. But if it comes from the teams, then we’ll have to take a call. But till now, no such situation has arisen.”
While debate has intensified publicly, the absence of formal feedback from franchises means the board is not under immediate pressure to make changes before completing its scheduled assessment.
On-field impact continues to shape results
The influence of the rule has remained evident throughout the season, with teams frequently leveraging it to shift momentum during chases and defend totals. In a recent fixture against Lucknow Super Giants, Rohit Sharma entered as an impact substitute and scored 84 off 44 deliveries, forming a 143-run opening stand to guide Mumbai Indians to a successful chase of 229 with eight balls remaining.
Such performances underline how the flexibility offered by the rule continues to play a decisive role in high-scoring encounters, particularly in conditions that favour aggressive batting.
Wider concerns extend beyond gameplay
Alongside the technical review, the BCCI is also examining ways to reinforce discipline across the league following recent off-field incidents. The board is evaluating stricter protocols to ensure that teams, players, and officials adhere to established standards and maintain the tournament’s reputation.
With the season approaching its conclusion, the upcoming review is expected to determine whether the Impact Player rule remains a central feature of the IPL or undergoes adjustments based on team feedback and overall competitive balance.
