Betway SA20 Season 3 has delivered a major boost to the South African economy, with the latest Economic Impact Assessment (EIA) revealing a total GDP contribution of R5.3 billion — up from R4.3 billion in Season 2. The announcement follows the successful Season 4 player auction, where R116.9 million was invested in South African talent.

The report outlines the growing off-field impact of the League, showing significant increases in GDP, direct expenditure, household income, and job creation, firmly establishing SA20 as a key economic driver in the country’s sports and entertainment ecosystem.

League drives national growth and job creation

The EIA shows a substantial rise in direct expenditure, which increased from R1.5 billion in Season 2 to R1.8 billion in Season 3. Annualised employment opportunities also grew by 2% to 8,199 jobs, supporting livelihoods across sports, tourism, and hospitality sectors.

Household income surpassed R1.4 billion for the first time, highlighting the League’s positive financial impact on local communities. Small businesses, particularly those near match venues, continue to benefit from increased visitor activity — both local and international.

Graeme Smith: “A game-changer for South African cricket and the economy”

Betway SA20 is proving to be a game-changer, not only for cricket in South Africa but also for the country’s economy,” said League Commissioner Graeme Smith. “The recent auction highlighted how the franchises are committed to investing in the South African pipeline, while this Economic Impact Assessment showcases how the League’s impact is extending beyond the field.”

It’s incredible to see how, after only 3 seasons, we’ve been able to drive growth and create opportunities for our cricketers, the sports and hospitality industry, and the greater South African economy.”

Strong fan turnout and record ticket sales

Nearly 400,000 tickets were sold in Season 3, equating to 76% of stadium capacity across all matches. The final match has sold out for three consecutive seasons, and the League also celebrated the sale of its 1 millionth ticket during Season 3 — a major fan engagement milestone.

The league’s growing popularity is set to expand even further with Season 4 scheduled to begin on 26 December 2025, strategically positioned during the festive season to attract larger holiday crowds.

Season 4 ticket sales to open soon

Tickets for Season 4 go on sale on 10 October via www.sa20.co.za/matches and at all stadium ticket offices. The new timeslot and increased economic momentum make the upcoming season a critical opportunity for both the League and its stakeholders.
