According to a report by Sportstar, the threatening email arrived at approximately 11 am IST on Wednesday, when players from both teams were still at the venue. The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) notified local police, and a Cyber Cell team subsequently visited the stadium to investigate.
The incident also affected several other prominent institutions across Ahmedabad, raising security concerns beyond the cricket ground.
India and Australia U-19 players leave stadium safely
The security alert occurred towards the end of the second multi-day match, which was being played at Ground A of the Narendra Modi Stadium complex.
The match concluded at approximately 11:15 am IST, shortly after the threatening message was received.
Players were not immediately informed about the email. Once the situation was communicated to them, both teams departed the stadium after 1 pm IST in accordance with the relevant security protocols.
The incident did not prevent India Under-19 from completing a 10-wicket victory over Australia Under-19. Debutant Tanmay Baloda played a decisive role, taking 14 wickets in the match.
Gujarat Cricket Association responds to security alert
The threatening message was also linked to an upcoming concert by Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh, scheduled to take place at Narendra Modi Stadium on November 21.
GCA Secretary Anil Patel addressed the incident and the association’s response in comments to Sportstar.
“We informed the local police as soon as we received the email. This has happened a couple of times earlier as well, including during the World Cup 2023 and IPL.”
The stadium was among several locations targeted by threatening emails that morning.
The Gujarat High Court, along with multiple schools and colleges in Ahmedabad, also received similar messages.
Hindustan Times reported that the emails contained pro-Khalistan references and warnings concerning Dosanjh’s concert, including mention of his November 1 performance at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Security personnel and bomb detection teams were deployed to educational institutions that had received the threats.
Previous threats at Narendra Modi Stadium
The latest incident follows earlier security alerts involving one of India’s most prominent international cricket venues.
During the 2023 ODI World Cup, authorities received threats ahead of the India-Pakistan match in Ahmedabad. Police subsequently arrested a 29-year-old man from Rajkot over an allegedly threatening email sent to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Security arrangements around the stadium were strengthened ahead of that fixture.
A further incident was reported during the 2025 Indian Premier League season.
According to Hindustan Times, the Gujarat Cricket Association received an email threatening an explosion at the stadium ahead of a Gujarat Titans match against Lucknow Super Giants.
Police, bomb disposal personnel and dog squads conducted searches covering the dressing rooms, spectator stands, galleries, VIP areas, media facilities and surrounding locations. No suspicious material was discovered.
Upcoming events bring stadium security into focus
The reference to Diljit Dosanjh’s November 21 concert places the stadium’s upcoming entertainment schedule at the centre of the latest security concerns.
Narendra Modi Stadium serves as a venue for major cricket fixtures as well as large-scale entertainment events, requiring coordination between event organisers, the Gujarat Cricket Association and local security authorities.
With the concert identified in the threatening email, security arrangements for the scheduled event will remain an important consideration for the venue’s organisers and law enforcement agencies.
