Cameron Green scrutiny grows as Finch, Pietersen and Bangar question KKR role and strategy

Debate intensifies around KKR’s INR 25.2 crore signing as concerns emerge over role clarity, team balance and early IPL 2026 returns

Discussion is now surrounding Cameron Green, whose start to IPL 2026 has prompted a broader discussion around both his individual output and Kolkata Knight Riders’ strategic use of their most expensive overseas signing.

Finch flags shift in presence at the crease

Aaron Finch was among the first to highlight a visible change in Green’s batting approach, pointing to a difference in presence compared to previous seasons. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show, the former Australia Captain suggested the issue extends beyond isolated dismissals.

“He was imposing at the crease. Now he looks tentative. Don’t push him down. Push him either up the order, or give him a rest,” Finch said.

That observation reflects a wider concern around how Green is currently navigating his innings. Across his first three appearances, he has struggled to convert starts, with his dismissals — including a run-out — preventing him from building momentum. Finch noted that while not every setback has been self-inflicted, the overall pattern suggests a dip in confidence.

“One of those dismissals has been a run out, not a part of his fault. Still, he’s missed out twice. There’s a bit of panic, he’s not looking the same as the past. Remember when he was at the top of the order for MI – how he had totally different intent.”

Role clarity becomes central to the debate

Beyond form, the conversation has increasingly shifted toward how Green is being positioned within the KKR lineup. Batting in the top order without contributing with the ball has raised questions about whether the current role maximises his strengths.

Kevin Pietersen, speaking on JioStar, challenged that deployment, arguing that the responsibility attached to the No. 3 position may not align with Green’s natural game.

“I won’t talk about money (auction price), but I don’t think he is good enough for batting at No. 3. He is not bowling. Batting at 3 here and taking on that responsibility. He’s a middle-order batter who bowls a bit, and that’s what he does,” he said.

For a player acquired at INR 25.2 crore (approx. US$ 2.7 million / AUD 3.9 million), that assessment brings the focus squarely onto team construction and how value is being extracted from overseas slots.

Bangar highlights selection and balance concerns

Sanjay Bangar expanded the discussion by focusing on squad composition and the importance of specialist roles in T20 cricket. Speaking during a discussion on JioStar, he suggested that Green’s current utilisation creates a structural imbalance.

“You have to think of the specialists because if you think of Rachin Ravindra, and if you want to talk about Cameron Green, they are not necessarily proven T20 players, and when you’re picking overseas players, they have to be specialists because there are only 4 spots available,” he said.

Bangar noted that without a bowling role, Green’s fit as a pure batter becomes harder to justify within that framework.

“So if you look at who is the ideal player, if Cameron Green is not bowling. Then he doesn’t fit into that just a batsman category as far as an overseas batter is concerned.”

He pointed to alternative profiles that offer clearer role definition in the format. “So you might as well think of Rovman Powell, who is a proven T20 specialist who bats and does a very specialised job. So I like Rovman Powell for the fact that he’s a specialist. He does a role, and he’s a proven commodity,” he added.

Tactical decisions add another layer

Alongside individual and structural questions, Kolkata Knight Riders’ on-field decisions have also come under examination. Finch’s analysis extended to a recent rain-affected fixture, where conditions suggested an advantage for the team bowling first, yet Kolkata opted to bat.

His view was that the decision did not align with the available information — including weather conditions and how shortened matches tend to favour chasing sides under DLS calculations. In such scenarios, he indicated that reading conditions correctly is as critical as execution on the field.

A defining phase for KKR’s investment

For Kolkata Knight Riders, the conversation around Cameron Green has quickly evolved into a broader assessment of fit, role clarity, and strategic alignment.

With a significant financial outlay and limited flexibility in overseas selections, decisions around how Green is utilised carry added weight. Whether that leads to a shift in batting position, reintegration of his bowling, or a recalibration of team balance will shape not just his campaign, but KKR’s overall trajectory.
