Cricket Australia announced it had terminated an employee on Friday following an independent review into whistleblower allegations involving the senior staff member amid continued redundancies and internal restructuring across the organisation, according to a report by The Age’s Daniel Brettig and Chris Barrett. The matter has also reportedly drawn attention from the National Rugby League (NRL) integrity unit in connection with the individual’s previous employment in rugby league administration. Cricket Australia later confirmed the independent review substantiated an undeclared conflict-of-interest allegation connected to a procurement process and said the staff member had left the organisation.

Cricket Australia said in a statement to The Age: “An independent assessment of claims made by an anonymous whistleblower concerning a CA staff member has been completed.”

“An allegation of an undeclared conflict of interest during a procurement process has been substantiated. The staff member has now left CA.”

Governance questions emerge during CA restructuring

The allegations reportedly centred on procurement decisions and the awarding of work to businesses allegedly connected to the staffer, with the contracts under scrutiny said to exceed A$600,000 (approx. US$432K). According to the report, the independent review substantiated an undeclared conflict-of-interest allegation linked to the procurement process.

The allegations surfaced during another round of workforce reductions at Cricket Australia, with staff departures across March and April following earlier cuts made last year. According to the report, the whistleblower who raised the concerns was later made redundant after allegedly submitting detailed material to the CA board regarding the procurement issues.

The whistleblower complaints also reportedly raised questions about how the staffer was recruited to Cricket Australia and how later appointments within the same department were handled. According to the report, two additional former NRL employees were subsequently hired into the division overseen by the staffer at the centre of the allegations, prompting further scrutiny around internal hiring and oversight processes.

The report also stated that company registration records, procurement approvals, and payment timelines formed part of the material examined during the independent review, though Cricket Australia has not publicly commented beyond confirming the findings and the staffer’s departure from the organisation.

The NRL was also reportedly approached for comment regarding the investigation linked to the individual’s previous role in rugby league administration, though no public response had been issued at the time of reporting
