BACKGROUND
Cricket Ireland is the national governing body (NGB) for the men’s and women’s game throughout Ireland, with ultimate responsibility for its national and international aspects. The future of Irish cricket is very bright given the growth of the sport driven by significant success on the international stage in the last decade leading to an unprecedented visibility for Irish cricket at home and abroad.
Our emergence as a sport of national significance is growing following the elevation of Cricket Ireland to ICC Full Membership and Test Status, along with entry into the sport’s Future Tours Programme in both the men’s and women’s game that now sees Ireland playing consistently against the best teams in the world for the foreseeable future.
THE ROLE
The Observations Officer will play a role in the administration of umpire observations across the island of Ireland. The role is part-time with flexible hours coupled with high involvement during cricket season. This position undertakes important functions such as round by round appointment of observers for all matches played under the auspices of Cricket Ireland.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Observation Administration
o Gather availability for all observers at the start of the season.
o Make boundary and peer observation appointments for the season.
o Monitor the workload of contracted umpires in regards to observations to ensure they are used to the correct capacity.
o Develop and maintain a guide sheet for observations.
o Ensure all observers are trained to review an umpire performance correctly.
o Read and review all observation reports and maintain information gathered.
o Send observations to umpires and be available to discuss with them the content of observation reports.
o Gather data in order to provide areas of improvement for each umpire.
o Collate and present the summary of all reports to accurately reflect the umpire’s performances for the season.
o Assist in the processes within the CI Match Official Appointment & Assessment Policy to decide on the appointment of Cricket Ireland panels for umpires.
o Work with PU Match Official associations to find potential umpire prospects.
o Work with provincial unions to have observations in place in provincial union competitions.
o Ensure a focus on assessing female umpiring prospects.
o Attend relevant meetings as required.
REQUIREMENTS
Ideal candidate will have the following background:
o Relevant qualifications or demonstrated previous experience in a relevant field
o Current Drivers Licence
o Safeguarding / Garda Vetting Clearance
o Experience in sport (cricket preferred) at a local, provincial, national and/or international level
o Strong understanding of umpiring cricket.
o Sound administration experience, including report preparation, record keeping and use of IT applications
o Ability to successfully work as part of a team and individually
o Success in developing and maintaining positive relationships with key stakeholders
o High level of ambition, drive, attention to detail and strong work ethic
o Play a part in contributing to the ongoing evolution of Cricket Ireland’s strategic plan
