The transition era at Chennai Super Kings appears to have taken a significant step forward, with the franchise confirming that MS Dhoni will miss their opening game of the Indian Premier League 2026 season — handing Sanju Samson immediate responsibility behind the stumps.
The development comes ahead of CSK’s clash with Rajasthan Royals, Samson’s former team, following his high-profile pre-auction trade — a move increasingly viewed as both a short-term solution and a long-term succession plan.
Dhoni ruled out of opener as CSK reshuffle begins
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that Dhoni will not feature in the season opener, effectively accelerating speculation around the franchise’s wicketkeeping transition.
“See, obviously, Sanju will be keeping because his MS Dhoni is not going to play. Sanju’s form is great and he’s been knocking well in the nets also. So we’re hoping that he’ll give the impact that CSK is looking for during the current season. Of course, we have Ruturaj, who is also capable of taking the team to higher levels, and his captaincy is one which definitely will lift the team,” Viswanathan said while speaking to RevSportz ahead of the match against Rajasthan Royals.
The decision immediately places Samson at the center of CSK’s on-field structure — not just as a batter, but in a leadership-adjacent role traditionally dominated by Dhoni.

CSK backing Samson’s form and leadership potential
Despite the spotlight, CSK leadership is keen to avoid burdening Samson with expectations too early.
“As far as Sanju is concerned, we don’t want to put any pressure on him because we know his capabilities. I have not spent much time talking to Sanju, as I met him only a couple of days back, and during practice, I would never go and disturb him. I’m very confident that Sanju, with his abilities and his form, will be a great bet for us,” Viswanathan added.
The emphasis on “no pressure” reflects CSK’s historically measured approach to transitions — seen previously in their handling of leadership shifts.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s leadership adds another layer
Alongside Samson’s integration, CSK are continuing to build around captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, whose leadership is expected to define the next phase of the franchise.
The combination of Gaikwad’s captaincy and Samson’s expanded role suggests a distributed leadership model — a shift from the Dhoni-centric structure that defined CSK for over a decade.
