A new chapter begins as CSK lands Sanju Samson in ₹18 crore (US$2M) deal
In a significant move that sent ripples through the Indian Premier League (IPL) community, Sanju Samson has officially been traded to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from Rajasthan Royals (RR) for the IPL 2026 season. The trade, valued at ₹18 crore (approx. US$2M), was announced on the final day of the retention window, confirming the end of Samson’s storied 12-year stint with RR.

Samson, who made his IPL debut in 2013, has played 177 matches and joins only the third franchise of his career after previously appearing for Delhi in 2016 and 2017. The IPL statement highlighted his experience, noting, “Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain and India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson will now represent Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at his existing league fee of INR 18 crore. One of the most experienced players in the league, Samson has played 177 IPL matches. CSK will be only the third franchise of his career. Since making his IPL debut in 2013, the senior pro has represented RR in all but two seasons—2016 and 2017—when he played for Delhi Capitals.”
Rajasthan Royals reflect on an emotional exit
In a video posted by the Rajasthan Royals on social media, team owner Manoj Badale offered insight into Samson’s decision to move on, citing emotional fatigue and a deep personal connection with the franchise.
“The first time this year or in the past year that Sanju talked about moving on was probably in Kolkata towards the end of the season. We had a meeting after the game. He’s a very honest guy, and he was personally, emotionally drained. He cares a huge amount about RR, and I think having our worst season in 18 years took a lot out of him,” said Badale.
He added that Samson’s decision wasn’t made lightly and spoke volumes about his character and long-standing commitment to the team. “I think he just felt that, having given the best part of 14 (12) years with a break to RR, he wanted just a new chapter to refresh the end of his journey with the IPL. In the case of Sanju, when he made the request, I think it felt different for us. He’s a very authentic man, and if he says something, he generally means it. He’s been an extraordinary servant of the franchise for 12 years. It’s not just the batting that the fans see or the sixes that the fans see; it’s everything else he’s put into it.”

Farewell message from Samson: “I am moving on”
Following the announcement of his trade, Samson posted a heartfelt farewell to RR fans and teammates on Instagram, expressing gratitude and acknowledging his emotional journey with the team.
“We are only here for a short period of time. Gave MY everything to this franchise, enjoyed some great cricket, made some lifetime relations, treated everyone in the franchise as my family..And when its time..I AM moving On..Shall always be grateful for everything @rajasthanroyals,” Samson wrote.
His note resonated deeply with fans, many of whom flooded social media platforms with emotional tributes, describing him as one of the greatest to have played for the Royals. His legacy includes over 4700 IPL runs, three centuries, and numerous match-winning knocks — a testament to his consistency and leadership over the years.
The first time I noticed him was when he hit those 9 sixes. When he joined RR,I started following every single match because I loved his batting. He is an exceptionally talented batsman, and his extracover shot is simply gorgeous. Thank you, Sanju, for everything you’ve done for RR.

Badale quashes instability rumours
In light of the trade and other recent changes within the RR setup, including Rahul Dravid’s departure as head coach, questions were raised about stability in the franchise. However, Badale dismissed such concerns, asserting that the transition was internally smooth.
“While there’s been a sort of media narrative of Rajasthan Royals are in chaos, people leaving, Rahul leaving, the reality is that’s not how it’s felt internally. Internally, we committed to a process and a timeline. We’re maybe one week later than we hope to be, or maybe two weeks later, but it all feels very calm here,” he clarified.
A defining legacy and fresh start
Sanju Samson’s tenure with Rajasthan Royals has been marked by iconic performances and unwavering commitment. As captain, he led the team to a near-title finish in 2022 and had his best season in 2024, scoring 531 runs at a strike rate of 153.47. From his unforgettable debut knock of 119 as captain to building lifelong bonds within the team, Samson leaves behind a legacy that will be difficult to replace.
Now, as he dons the yellow of CSK, one of IPL’s most storied franchises, fans across India will watch closely to see how this new chapter unfolds — for both Sanju Samson and the Royals he leaves behind.
