Despite the timing, Trump’s public support for Team USA during the T20 World Cup highlights cricket’s growing profile in America—after a gutsy showing against defending champions India.

Just hours after Team USA’s spirited performance against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, former U.S. President Donald Trump took to social media to offer his support—highlighting cricket’s growing profile in America, even if his message came a day late.

Trump’s post on Truth Social came after the USA had already suffered a 29-run defeat to India in their Group A opener at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Nonetheless, the message sparked interest and buzz in cricket circles, reflecting the increasing recognition the sport is receiving in the U.S.

Writing on his account, Trump said: “I just heard the Cricket World Cup is underway in India! I wish the best of luck to TEAM USA! We have a very strong team. America is rooting for you!”

Late but loud: Trump’s message gets attention

The post—shared with a photo of the USA squad—was published on February 8, nearly 24 hours after the match had concluded. While its timing drew some playful reactions from fans online, it also marked the most high-profile American political support the national cricket team has received on the world stage.

The message was amplified by Sergio Gor, U.S. Ambassador to India, who was at the stadium for the match and reshared Trump’s post with a brief note: “Thank you Mr. President.”

The nod from Trump is significant as cricket continues its push into the American mainstream, backed by the establishment of Major League Cricket and the USA’s hosting role in global ICC tournaments. With the sport also set to debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Trump’s message adds political weight to cricket’s U.S. journey.

India overcome early scare to defeat USA

On the field, defending champions India were given a brief scare before securing a 29-run victory. The Americans impressed with both bat and ball, reducing India to 77 for 6 at one point before Suryakumar Yadav’s match-winning knock of 84* off 49 balls lifted the hosts to a competitive 161/9.

USA’s bowlers, led by Shadley van Schalkwyk (4/25), stunned India’s top order in front of a packed Wankhede crowd. In reply, USA lost early wickets to Mohammed Siraj (3/29) and were reeling at 13/3 before rallying through middle-order contributions from Milind Kumar (34), Sanjay Krishnamurthi (37), and Shubham Ranjane (37).

The Americans eventually finished on 132/8, earning praise for a gritty performance that narrowed the gap between established giants and emerging nations.

Looking ahead: USA’s campaign continues

With India and Pakistan in their group, along with the Netherlands and Namibia, the USA faces a tough road ahead. But after pushing India harder than expected and with a famous Super Over win over Pakistan still fresh from the 2024 edition, the Americans remain optimistic.

They now shift focus to their next clash against Pakistan in Colombo, aiming to replicate their previous heroics and continue cricket’s breakout moment in the United States.

And while Trump’s message didn’t arrive in time to alter the result, it may prove timely in cricket’s broader mission—to plant deeper roots in American soil.
