Durban has taken a significant step towards hosting matches at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 after eThekwini Municipality approved a Host City Agreement with Cricket South Africa, reinforcing the city’s ambitions to play a central role in one of cricket’s biggest global events.
The decision authorises City Manager Musa Mbhele to sign the agreement on behalf of the municipality, while Executive Director for Community Services Dr Vusi Mazibuko will oversee its implementation as preparations gather pace.
World Cup expected to deliver economic boost
Hosting World Cup matches is expected to generate wider economic benefits for Durban by attracting international visitors, commercial partners, media organisations and cricket supporters, while creating opportunities across the tourism, hospitality, accommodation, transport, retail and entertainment sectors.
The tournament is also expected to provide opportunities for local businesses, support employment and contribute to skills development as the city prepares to welcome one of international cricket’s premier events.
Municipality outlines implementation plans
eThekwini Municipal Council said in an official statement: “An allocation of R600 000 has been provided in the 2026/27 financial year budget to support preparatory and implementation activities linked to Durban’s Host City obligations. The full scope of municipal responsibilities and related operational requirements will be finalised during the implementation process and will be incorporated into future budgeting and approval processes.”
Municipal spokesperson Mandla Nsele said in an official statement: “The agreement will enable Durban to participate in the hosting of this globally recognised tournament, which is expected to attract international visitors, media coverage, commercial partners and cricket supporters to the City.”
Focus shifts towards tournament delivery
The Host City Agreement provides the framework for Durban’s involvement as South Africa prepares to co-host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 alongside Zimbabwe and Namibia.
With the agreement now approved and implementation responsibilities assigned within the municipality, attention will turn to delivering Durban’s host city commitments ahead of the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from October 4 to November 21, 2027.
