T20 veterans make a landmark move from IPL to PSL
In a decision that signals a notable shift in the global T20 circuit, former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis and England all-rounder Moeen Ali have opted out of the 2026 Indian Premier League auction and committed to playing in the 2026 season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Both players announced their decisions through official posts on social media. Du Plessis made his statement via Twitter and Instagram, while Moeen Ali took to Instagram to share his excitement about the upcoming PSL season.
Du Plessis, who has been a mainstay in the IPL since 2012, reflected on the weight of the decision and the impact the league has had on his career.
“After 14 seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to put my name into the auction this year,” he stated in a heartfelt message.

Faf du Plessis ends an IPL era with gratitude
Acknowledging the deep bond he shares with the IPL, du Plessis offered an emotional tribute to the tournament, its franchises, teammates, and the Indian fans.
“It’s a big decision, and one that comes with a lot of gratitude when I look back. This league has been a massive part of my journey. I’ve been lucky to play with world-class teammates, for amazing franchises, and in front of fans whose passion is like nothing else,” he continued in his statement.
His legacy in the IPL includes standout stints with Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and most recently, Delhi Capitals. Across 154 IPL matches, he scored 4,773 runs at an average of 35.10 and a strike rate of 135.79, with a highest score of 96 and 39 fifties to his name.
Looking back at his time in India, du Plessis expressed a personal connection that extends beyond cricket.
“Fourteen years is a long time, and I’m proud of what this chapter has meant to me. India has a special place in my heart, and this certainly isn’t a goodbye – you’ll see me again,” he went on to say.
PSL beckons: A fresh challenge for du Plessis
While closing one chapter, du Plessis is opening another — by heading to the PSL for a full-season stint in 2026.
“This year, I’ve chosen to take on a new challenge and will be playing in the upcoming PSL season,” he emphasised in his announcement.
The South African veteran previously featured in the PSL with Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators, but this marks his first full-season commitment to the league.
He described the switch as a professional and personal opportunity:
“It’s an exciting step for me – a chance to experience something new, to grow as a player, and to embrace a league filled with incredible talent and energy,” he reflected further.
Du Plessis was equally reflective about what India has meant to him over the years:
“India has given me friendships, lessons, and memories that have shaped me as a cricketer and as a person,” he added in his message.
And as he prepares to return to Pakistan, he embraced the prospect of a new cultural and sporting experience:
“A new country. A new environment. A new challenge. I’m looking forward to the Pakistan hospitality,” he concluded in the post.
Moeen Ali follows suit, praises PSL’s rise
Joining du Plessis in the move is England’s Moeen Ali, who also confirmed he would skip IPL 2026 to participate in PSL Season 11. In his Instagram post, Moeen expressed admiration for the league’s evolution and the fervor of Pakistani crowds.
“I’m really excited to be joining HBL PSL in its New Era. The league has earned a reputation for top-level T20 cricket, with high-quality competition and world-class talent across every team. Playing in Pakistan is always incredible; quality of cricket is outstanding and the passion and intensity from the crowd push you to bring your best. I’m looking forward to being part of it all and creating some great memories along the way. Ready for another special experience Insha’Allah!”
Moeen has previously played for Multan Sultans and now returns at a time when the league is expanding, with new teams and a rising global profile. The Multan franchise itself is reportedly undergoing a rebrand under new ownership, raising questions about whether Moeen will continue with them or be picked by another team in the revamped setup.
