Faf du Plessis sets new T20 captaincy record in MLC
Joburg Super Kings and Texas Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis has etched his name into T20 history, surpassing Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli as the highest-scoring T20 captain of all time.
The 40-year-old former South Africa skipper has been in red-hot form in the 2024 Major League Cricket season, leading the Texas Super Kings and currently topping the tournament’s run charts with 409 runs at an average of 51.12. His tally includes two centuries and an unselfish retirement on 91 runs against the Seattle Orcas.
Du Plessis breaks Kohli’s record in style
It was during that knock against Seattle that Du Plessis officially overtook Virat Kohli, who previously held the T20I captaincy scoring record with 6,564 runs. Du Plessis now stands atop the list with 6,575 career T20 runs as captain.
“I’ve always enjoyed my cricket with extra responsibility, that’s something I never get tired of,” Du Plessis said after achieving the record.
Upcoming chance to extend the lead
Du Plessis has another chance to grow his lead when the Texas Super Kings face MI New York in Qualifier 2 on Saturday. TSK were pushed into the eliminator after their first playoff match against Washington Freedom was abandoned without a ball bowled. Washington advanced directly to the final due to topping the MLC standings.

- Faf du Plessis: 6,575 runs
- Virat Kohli: 6,564 runs
- MS Dhoni: 6,283 runs
- Rohit Sharma: 6,064 runs
