Integrity breach prompts swift institutional response
Four Assam cricketers have been suspended in one of the most serious integrity breaches to hit Indian domestic cricket this season, and underscoring the role of internal reporting and swift institutional response in confronting corruption.
The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) confirmed that immediate disciplinary action was taken after allegations surfaced during the 2025 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Lucknow, prompting intervention by the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU).
How the allegations surfaced within the Assam camp
The episode came to light after concerns were raised internally by members of the Assam squad. According to officials, players approached captain Riyan Parag after being contacted with what were described as corrupt proposals. Parag escalated the matter to the BCCI’s ACSU, triggering a formal enquiry.
“It was a current player who informed Assam Cricket Association, who took the matter to ACU of BCCI. The association took note of it and filed an FIR. Police will conduct further investigation,” The Indian Express quoted a BCCI official as saying.
Findings of the ACSU and confirmation of misconduct
Following the ACSU’s enquiry, the ACA issued suspension orders against Amit Sinha, Ishan Ahmed, Aman Tripathi, and Abhishek Thakuri. In a statement detailing the basis for the action, ACA secretary Sanatan Das outlined the allegations and the timeframe involved.
“The above four players, who have represented Assam at various stages, are accused of influencing and attempting to instigate some of the current Assam team players, who took part in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025 held in Lucknow from November 26 to December 8,” Das said in a press release.
Legal action and escalation beyond cricketing sanctions
The association confirmed that the matter has progressed beyond internal discipline into the legal domain. “Following the emergence of these allegations, the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) of the BCCI conducted an enquiry. The ACA has also initiated criminal proceedings. Prima facie, there appears to be involvement of the aforementioned four players in serious misconduct, affecting the integrity of the sports,” Das said in the press release. An FIR has since been lodged with the Crime Branch in Guwahati.
Scope and terms of the suspension
The ACA clarified that the suspensions extend beyond match participation, covering all cricket-related roles under its jurisdiction. District units and affiliated bodies have been instructed to ensure compliance.
“The suspension of the players was done to curtail any scope of further deterioration of the situation. Accordingly, during the suspension period, the players are barred from: Taking part in any State-level tournament or match conducted under the Assam Cricket Association, District Units or affiliated clubs. Participating in any cricket-related activity, including officiating as match referee, coach, umpire etc. The suspension will continue til the final outcome of the investigation and/or any further decision of the Association. All District Associations are directed to ensure strict compliance with this order and to inform clubs and cricket academies under their jurisdiction for the necessary action,” Das added.
He concluded by reaffirming the association’s broader position on governance: “The ACA reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the integrity and spirit of the sport and will continue to uphold the highest standards of transparency, discipline and ethical conduct.”
