Pretoria Capitals have announced Sourav Ganguly as their new head coach ahead of Betway SA20 Season 4, with Shaun Pollock joining him as assistant coach in a major shake-up of the franchise’s coaching staff.
The former India captain and current JSW Sports director of cricket replaces Jonathan Trott, who was unable to guide the Capitals to playoff contention over the past two seasons. Ganguly’s appointment marks a strategic pivot for the Capitals, who are aiming to bounce back from back-to-back fifth-place finishes.
Ganguly steps into new coaching role with Pretoria Capitals
Ganguly, 53, is no stranger to leadership roles in cricket, having served as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal from 2015 to 2019. Though he’s been a familiar figure behind the scenes at JSW Sports, this will be his first hands-on coaching assignment in a franchise league.
The Capitals enjoyed a strong debut in SA20 Season 1, finishing top of the group stage but losing the final to Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Since then, the franchise has struggled for consistency. Trott, who took over from Graham Ford in Season 3, was unable to replicate the early success.
Shaun Pollock returns to coaching after SA20 commentary role
Joining Ganguly is former Proteas captain and ICC Hall of Famer Shaun Pollock, who has been appointed assistant coach. Pollock had served as a commentator in the league’s first three seasons but now returns to coaching duties, having previously held a three-year stint with Mumbai Indians in the IPL up to 2012.
His on-field experience and analytical depth from broadcasting are expected to add valuable balance to the Pretoria Capitals coaching unit.
Capitals head into SA20 Player Auction with biggest purse
The first major task for Ganguly and Pollock will be navigating the SA20 Season 4 Player Auction, set for September 9 in Johannesburg. The Capitals hold the largest remaining purse at R32.5 million—more than any other franchise—after retaining only Will Jacks and pre-signing Sherfane Rutherford and Andre Russell as a Wildcard pick.
With major changes in the dugout and strong auction capital, the Pretoria Capitals are set to make bold moves as they look to reestablish themselves as SA20 title contenders in 2025.
