Gautam Gambhir pushed for a change in India’s T20I leadership setup and sought Suryakumar Yadav’s removal as India T20I Captain amid concerns over his batting form, according to a report by CricBlogger. The discussions came after Suryakumar publicly spoke about leading India in future global events, with Gambhir placing significant importance on performances when assessing both selection and leadership responsibilities in the shortest format.

Concerns over form gathered over time

The questions surrounding Suryakumar’s position were not limited to a single tournament or series. In T20Is during 2025, he managed 218 runs in 19 innings at an average of 13.62, with a highest score of 47 not out and a strike rate of 123.16, numbers that reflected a difficult period by his standards.

His struggles continued into IPL 2026, where he accumulated 270 runs at an average of 20.77 across the season. The campaign ranked among his least productive IPL seasons and intensified scrutiny around both his form and leadership role.

According to CricBlogger, Gambhir raised concerns with selectors during the IPL and discussed whether Suryakumar should continue as T20I Captain. The conversations also extended to his place in the squad as India’s decision-makers evaluated options ahead of the next cycle of international tournaments.

Alternative candidates entered the frame

As the leadership debate developed, Gambhir proposed Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan as potential alternatives for the captaincy. Both players were considered during the early stages of discussions as India explored different succession plans in the format.

Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar, however, held a different view. He argued that if recent performances and leadership credentials were central to the process, Shreyas Iyer had established the strongest case among the available candidates.

Iyer’s standing was strengthened by his batting returns and leadership record in franchise cricket, factors that increasingly pushed him towards the front of the race as deliberations continued.

How Iyer became the preferred choice

The report states that Gambhir later discussed his preferences with the BCCI and received an initial indication that a leadership change could be considered. He was also informed that the final decision on India’s next T20I Captain would rest with the selectors.

Further discussions between Gambhir and Agarkar eventually narrowed the field. As the process unfolded, a source told CricBlogger, “Gambhir wanted a change, but Agarkar wanted Iyer,” highlighting the differing approaches that shaped the final outcome.

World Cup performances added another layer

Suryakumar’s T20 World Cup campaign presented a more encouraging picture than his broader run of form. He scored 242 runs in nine innings at an average of 30.25 and a strike rate of 136.72, including a highest score of 84 not out.

His tournament returns featured one half-century, 21 fours and 10 sixes, placing him among the top 10 run-scorers at the event. Even so, the wider body of performances before and after the tournament formed part of the backdrop to the leadership discussions that ultimately shifted towards identifying India’s next long-term T20I Captain.
