In IPL 2025, two prominent cricketers, Glenn Maxwell and Sanju Samson, have faced penalties for breaching the league’s strict Code of Conduct. Both instances highlight the BCCI’s ongoing efforts to maintain discipline during the high-stakes tournament.
Glenn Maxwell, the Australian all-rounder for PBKS, was slapped with a hefty fine for breaching Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s match against CSK. The article states, “Article 2.2 includes any action(s) outside the course of normal cricket actions, such as hitting or kicking the wickets and any action(s) which deliberately (i.e. intentionally), recklessly or negligently (in either case even if accidental) results in damage to the advertising boards, boundary fences, dressing room doors, mirrors, windows and other fixtures and fittings. For example, this offence may be committed, without limitation, when a Player swings his/her bat vigorously in frustration and causes damage to an advertising board.” Maxwell’s action, which was deemed an outburst of frustration, earned him the fine.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals’ captain Sanju Samson also found himself in the BCCI’s crosshairs after his team was penalized for a second offence under Article 2.22, which pertains to minimum over-rate violations. “As this was his (Samson) team’s second offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Samson was fined INR 24 lakhs,” the BCCI announced in an official statement.
The BCCI did not stop there, imposing fines on the rest of the Rajasthan Royals’ squad as well. “The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” the statement continued.
