New England T20I captain reinforces national commitment amid IPL withdrawal and potential ban
In a week of intense speculation, Harry Brook has made his stance unmistakably clear: playing for England comes before franchise cricket. The 25-year-old batter, newly appointed England’s T20I captain for the upcoming tour of Pakistan, addressed his withdrawal from the 2024 IPL and its possible repercussions with striking resolve.
“They haven’t told me. But if I do get banned, fair play,” Brook said, speaking to the BBC. “That’s the rule they put in place, but I’m completely committed to playing cricket for England.”
Brook on IPL exit: England comes first
Brook pulled out of the IPL shortly before the tournament began, citing personal reasons. Under current BCCI guidelines, players who withdraw late may face bans of up to two years from future IPL editions. Despite the financial stakes, Brook made clear that national duty remains his top priority.
“England is the way forward for me and franchise cricket can almost take a step back for a little while,” he stated. “I enjoy playing cricket for England more than anything else, so to lose a little bit of money here and there – I’d take that any day to play for England.”
Brook’s comments stand out in an era when many top cricketers balance international and franchise schedules. His unflinching loyalty to England offers a rare perspective, especially given the lucrative opportunities the IPL provides.
No franchise cricket ‘in the near future’
“I won’t be playing any franchise cricket in the near future, and I’ll be prioritizing England and whatever games we have with them,” Brook said, signaling a longer-term decision to step back from T20 leagues for the foreseeable future.
He also addressed the importance of workload management within England’s busy calendar, stressing that any breaks would be in service of long-term national performance.
“I’d like to play every game but if I require a week off and that’s the best thing going forward for my game, then I’m sure I’ll be allowed a week off. There might be a couple of opportunities to have a little break here and there,” he added.
Message to fans: England is everything
Brook’s message is consistent and clear: his loyalty lies with England. “This is my priority,” he affirmed. “At the end of the day, I enjoy playing cricket for England more than anything else.”
As he steps into a leadership role for England’s T20 side, Brook’s principled stand could resonate with fans and selectors alike—setting the tone for a new generation of players who place the Three Lions above all else.
