The ICC has concluded its review into the ECB's publication of Ben Stokes' dressing-room retirement video, with no further action set to be taken after correspondence between the two organisations.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will take no further action against the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over the release of Ben Stokes‘ retirement announcement video during the Trent Bridge Test, according to the Press Association, bringing the matter to a close after the governing body reviewed the circumstances surrounding its publication.

The issue centred on footage recorded inside England’s dressing room before the fourth day of the third Test against New Zealand. The video was later released on the ECB’s social media channels and shared with broadcasters while the match was still in progress, prompting the ICC to contact the ECB over whether its Players’ and Match Officials’ Areas (PMOA) standards had been complied with.

Matter concluded after ICC and ECB correspondence

The Press Association reports that the ICC wrote to the ECB regarding the video before the matter was subsequently resolved, with no sanctions now expected.

Neither the ICC nor the ECB has publicly commented on the outcome.

Earlier scrutiny focused on protected dressing-room areas

As previously reported by cricexec, the governing body’s concerns related to the publication of footage recorded inside England’s dressing room during an international match, with the PMOA framework forming part of the ICC’s wider anti-corruption measures.

Article 2.2.11 of the ICC’s Players’ and Match Officials’ Areas Minimum Standards states: “Ensure that there are no fixed or temporary video cameras or other recording equipment set up within any dressing room used by the teams for the purposes of broadcasting video or audio footage.”

The ICC’s standards also require any approved exceptions to receive prior authorisation under its anti-corruption procedures.

Stokes responded with humour

After reports first emerged that the ICC had contacted the ECB over the video, former England Captain Ben Stokes responded with a light-hearted post on X, writing: “Sack him.”

The video showed Stokes informing his England teammates that he would retire from international cricket at the end of the Trent Bridge Test. Although the footage was recorded before play on day four, it was made public while the match was still underway.

With the ICC deciding not to pursue the matter further, the review has now concluded without disciplinary action against the ECB
