Political tensions rise as India–Pakistan clash draws closer
After earlier controversy over Bangladesh’s refusal to play in India, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 now faces another geopolitical roadblock. The Pakistan government has formally declared that while it will allow its national team to participate in the tournament, it will not permit them to take the field against India in the high-profile group-stage fixture scheduled for February 15 in Colombo.
According to reports by ANI and India Today, India will proceed with its schedule as planned, following all protocols laid out by the International Cricket Council. The Indian team is expected to travel to Sri Lanka, continue training, attend the pre-match press conference, and report to the stadium on match day.
India to carry out full match-day duties in Colombo
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Pakistan’s participation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has confirmed that Team India will uphold its responsibilities under ICC rules.
“Team India will travel to Sri Lanka and follow ICC protocol. They will practice as per schedule, do a press conference and reach the stadium according to time and wait for the match referee to call off the match,” a BCCI source told ANI.
This ensures that the fixture, even in the likely event of a forfeit, will be handled by India in strict accordance with tournament regulations.
Pakistan government issues formal boycott statement
The Pakistan government made its position public through an official post on X, effectively ruling out its team’s participation in the group-stage match against India. No official explanation was provided.
“The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan Cricket Team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026; however, the Pakistan Cricket Team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February 2026 against India,” the Government of Pakistan said in an official statement on X.

There has been no further clarification from either the Pakistan Cricket Board or government officials on whether this stance could extend to a potential India–Pakistan meeting in the knockout rounds.
ICC maintains stance on tournament schedule and fairness
The International Cricket Council responded to the development by reiterating its commitment to schedule integrity and the principle of equal participation. While it did not announce any direct consequences for Pakistan, the ICC issued a general warning against selective involvement in its tournaments.
Earlier, when the Bangladesh Cricket Board declined to play matches in India, the ICC conducted a full security review and denied their relocation request. When Bangladesh failed to confirm its participation by the ICC deadline, the board moved swiftly to replace them with Scotland — a decision that underscored the ICC’s firm governance approach.
That precedent now hangs over the current situation as the ICC evaluates its next steps.
Knockout scenarios and India’s tournament build-up
Pakistan is still scheduled to play its other Group A matches against the Netherlands, the USA, and Namibia in Colombo. However, the long-term implications of their India boycott remain unclear, particularly if both sides qualify for the knockout stage.
India, meanwhile, opens its campaign on February 7 against the USA, followed by a match against the Netherlands on February 12. Despite the looming boycott, India’s commitment to follow ICC protocols ensures that it remains fully aligned with the spirit and structure of the tournament.
