Indian players to make historic debut in LPL 2025
The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is set to break new ground in 2025, with Indian cricketers officially confirmed to participate in the tournament for the very first time. Organisers announced that the upcoming sixth edition of Sri Lanka’s premier T20 league will kick off on December 1 and run until December 23, featuring 24 matches across three venues — the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy, and the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.
“For the very first time, Indian cricketers are expected to join the action, their names will be revealed soon, adding a whole new level of excitement for fans across the region,” the organisers said in an official press release.
The inclusion of Indian players is being viewed as a landmark development that will not only broaden the league’s audience but also bring a new dimension of competitiveness to Sri Lanka’s flagship T20 tournament.
The specific participating Indian players have yet to be named, but according to organisers, will be named in the near future.
Tournament format and schedule
The 2025 edition will see five franchises battle it out in a double round-robin format. Each team will play the others twice during the league phase, making up 20 matches before the playoffs.
The top two sides after the league stage will face off in Qualifier 1, with the winner advancing directly to the final. Teams placed third and fourth will contest the Eliminator, and the winner of that match will then play the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2 to decide the second finalist.
Organisers also confirmed that this year’s edition will be the longest in the league’s history, spanning 24 days to allow for maximum player participation and fan engagement.
Strategic timing ahead of a global cricket year
Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela said the scheduling of the 2025 edition had been deliberately aligned to support players’ preparation for a major international cricket calendar.
“The timing of this edition has been carefully chosen to ensure that players gain maximum exposure and high-quality match practice in the lead-up to a global cricketing year,” Dodanwela noted.
The tournament’s timing places it in direct competition with other major T20 leagues such as the UAE’s ILT20 and Australia’s Big Bash League, but organisers believe the inclusion of Indian players will give the LPL a significant edge.
A platform for emerging stars
Since its inception in 2020, the LPL has served as an important stage for local talent to play alongside international stars. Dodanwela emphasised that the 2025 edition will continue this tradition, potentially unearthing fresh prospects ahead of the next World Cup.
“Over the seasons, the LPL has emerged as a breeding ground for fresh talent, with several youngsters making their mark alongside international stars. This year too, we believe the league will throw up exciting new names who can go on to spring surprises on the world stage ahead of the World Cup,” Dodanwela said.
With defending champions Jaffna Kings looking to extend their dominance and Indian players set to make their debut, the LPL 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated editions in the tournament’s history.
