Fresh controversy erupted during Chennai Super Kings’ IPL 2026 clash against Lucknow Super Giants after broadcast visuals appeared to show an individual speaking on a mobile phone near the Lucknow camp during the early stages of the match at Chepauk. The clip spread rapidly across social media during Josh Inglis’ explosive innings, with viewers questioning whether IPL dugout communication rules may have been breached amid the league’s increasingly strict anti-corruption environment.

The moment was captured shortly after Inglis launched into Chennai’s bowling attack, hammering 85 off just 33 deliveries after returning to the LSG playing XI. Cameras briefly shifted toward the Lucknow setup during the opening over before online debate intensified over whether the individual shown on screen was positioned inside a restricted match area, a VIP section, or elsewhere inside the stadium.
No official clarification has yet been issued by the IPL, BCCI or Lucknow Super Giants regarding the viral visuals, while the identity and role of the individual seen on camera also remain unclear.
IPL phone restrictions return to spotlight
The incident has again drawn attention to the IPL’s strict Player and Match Official Area regulations surrounding electronic communication during live matches. The IPL PMOA guidelines state: “Mobile phones and other electronic communication devices are not allowed to be used in the PMOA.”
Under the league’s operating protocols, mobile phone access is heavily restricted across dressing rooms, dugouts and match-related operational zones during live play because of anti-corruption requirements. Only designated personnel are permitted limited device access in approved areas, while communication activity inside dugouts during matches is tightly controlled.
The renewed attention around the visuals also comes at a time when the BCCI has significantly increased its focus on compliance, access control and restricted-area discipline across IPL 2026.
BCCI advisory intensified compliance environment
As previously reported by cricexec, the BCCI recently circulated a seven-page advisory to IPL franchises after multiple protocol breaches and security concerns during the season. The document introduced tighter controls around restricted-area access, hotel security, franchise-owner interactions and player movement monitoring.
“The advisory has been issued in light of certain incidents observed during ongoing season and is intended to reinforce the standards of professionalism, discipline, security awareness and protocol compliance expected from all stakeholders associated with IPL,” the advisory document stated.
The document also warned franchises that future violations could trigger disciplinary proceedings under IPL and BCCI regulations. “The BCCI and the IPL Governing Council wish to make unequivocally clear that any breach of the directives set out in this advisory shall be treated as a serious disciplinary matter,” the document said.
Previous dugout breach already led to fine
The latest debate has also revived discussion around earlier enforcement action taken during the season. As previously reported by cricexec, Rajasthan Royals Team Manager Ravinder Singh Bhinder was fined ₹1 lakh (approx. US$1.1K) after admitting to using a mobile phone near the dugout during Rajasthan Royals’ match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati.
The breach was ruled to be in contravention of IPL PMOA protocols, with the BCCI imposing the financial penalty and warning Bhinder over future compliance obligations.
While the circumstances surrounding the CSK-LSG visuals remain unverified, the episode has once again pushed IPL dugout conduct and anti-corruption procedures back into focus during a season already dominated by increased scrutiny around operational discipline and restricted-area protocols.
