England’s search for a new Men’s Test Head Coach has gathered momentum with Justin Langer emerging as one of the most prominent names under consideration, backed publicly by former Australia Head Coach Darren Lehmann as the ECB works through a high-profile shortlist ahead of a Test series against Pakistan next month. The vacancy created by Brendon McCullum’s departure has attracted significant attention from across the international coaching landscape, with the ECB understood to have drawn up a nine-man shortlist as it looks to appoint a successor capable of leading England into the 2027 Ashes.
Lehmann endorses Langer and reveals he has not been contacted
Lehmann, currently Head Coach at Northamptonshire, was asked whether he would consider crossing the Ashes divide to take the England job and was candid about his own position. “I’m very happy coaching Northants and I haven’t had any phone calls,” he told Sky Sports. He added: “You’d certainly listen to it. I’m sure there’s so many applicants. My feeling is they’ve already made up their mind. If you remove someone mid-summer, you’ve got somebody in mind.”
While ruling himself out of immediate contention, Lehmann was unambiguous in his support for his former Australia colleague. Speaking to Sky Sports during Northamptonshire’s Vitality Blast semi-final against Somerset, he said: “If he (Langer) were to go for it, he’d be a really good coach.” Lehmann noted: “Whoever takes it on, they’ve got some really talented players, I see some good players in the county system.”
Langer’s franchise commitments present a familiar challenge
Langer oversaw 15 wins, 11 defeats and five draws during his time as Australia Head Coach, retaining the Ashes on English soil in 2019 before a 4-0 triumph in the Covid-impacted series in 2021-22. He resigned in acrimonious circumstances in February 2022 amid reports of friction with senior players, but his standing in the coaching world has remained high. Since departing international cricket he has served as Head Coach of Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and held a brief stint with Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred, giving him familiarity with the English domestic game from his playing days at Middlesex and Somerset.
Those franchise commitments present a complication the ECB will need to address if Langer is its preferred candidate, as he would face a decision on whether to relinquish those roles, combine them with the England position, or decline the approach entirely. It is a dynamic that has already shaped the search, with Andy Flower’s franchise obligations playing a central role in his own decision.
Flower rules himself out as Brook calls for swift appointment
Flower confirmed he had engaged directly with the ECB before stepping back from the running. “I have spoken with the ECB. We’re all aware of the vacancy,” he told reporters on Friday. He continued: “I have spoken with Rob and the ECB on that topic. The bottom line for me is that I’m very happy in the work that I’m doing at the moment.” The 58-year-old, who previously guided England to the top of the ICC Test rankings and three Ashes series victories during his earlier tenure, is currently Head Coach of both Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL and London Spirit in The Hundred — commitments he was unwilling to set aside.
With England’s three-match Test series against Pakistan beginning on 19 August, White-Ball Captain Harry Brook has made clear he wants the matter resolved quickly. “You’d like to hope that there’d be a test coach in place for the Pakistan series, but that decision isn’t up to me,” Brook told Sky Sports News. He added: “It’s up to the hierarchy and whatever they decide to do going into that series. I’m fully behind whoever they pick, and hopefully it’s the right decision.”
Flintoff, Trott and a wider field of contenders
According to reports, the ECB’s shortlist includes a range of candidates spanning international and franchise coaching experience. Former England Captain Andrew Flintoff, currently Head Coach of the England Lions and involved with the senior white-ball setup, has been linked with an internal promotion. His longstanding relationship with England Men’s Managing Director Rob Key from their playing days gives him an established working dynamic within the setup, though the ECB is understood to believe he may benefit from further experience before being handed the senior Test role. Flintoff also recently agreed to become Head Coach of Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League, a commitment that would require negotiation if the ECB moved for him.
Former England batter Jonathan Trott is another name in the frame. The 45-year-old stepped down as Afghanistan Head Coach following the 2024 T20 World Cup, having notably guided the side to the semi-finals of that tournament, and has since taken on a consultancy role with Ireland. Surrey Head Coach Gareth Batty, who led the county to three consecutive County Championship titles from 2022 to 2024, has also been mentioned, as has Derbyshire Head Coach Mickey Arthur, whose international experience spans South Africa, Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Richard Dawson, who guided Glamorgan back into Division One of the County Championship, rounds out the domestic contingent on the reported list.
Fleming’s candidacy and the wider international picture
According to a Daily Mail report, Stephen Fleming — who stood down as Chennai Super Kings Head Coach after an 18-year association that produced five IPL titles — is among those being considered. Should Fleming be appointed it would mark his first role in international cricket as a coach, though his franchise credentials are among the strongest of any candidate in the field. Tom Moody, currently serving as Lucknow Super Giants’ Global Director of Cricket, and Mike Hesson, Pakistan’s White-Ball Head Coach, have also been reported as part of a shortlist that reflects the ECB’s stated priority of appointing a coach with battle-tested experience ahead of the 2027 Ashes.
