Vaibhav Suryavanshi‘s remarkable IPL 2026 campaign has already established him as one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the game, but IPL Founder and former Chairman Lalit Modi believes the Rajasthan Royals opener is capable of reaching even greater heights. Following a season that saw the 15-year-old rewrite several tournament records, Modi predicted that Suryavanshi could become one of the biggest sporting stars in the world while also backing his ambition to achieve a feat never seen in men’s T20 cricket.

Ambition extends beyond existing records

Suryavanshi’s fearless approach has become one of the defining stories of the IPL, and the teenager has not hidden the scale of his personal goals. During a conversation with former England Captain Kevin Pietersen on The Switch, Suryavanshi said, “I want to score 200 in T20.”

When reminded that Chris Gayle’s 175 remains the highest individual score in the format, he added, “I want to break his record and score 200.”

The comments reflected the confidence that has accompanied Suryavanshi’s rise through the tournament, where he consistently challenged established bowlers despite being one of the youngest players in professional cricket.

A season that shattered expectations

Suryavanshi finished IPL 2026 as the competition’s leading run-scorer, accumulating 776 runs in 16 matches at an average of 48.50. His strike rate of 237.3 set a new benchmark among Orange Cap winners, while his tally of 72 sixes surpassed Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the most sixes in a single IPL season.

The Rajasthan Royals opener also collected five individual awards, including the Most Valuable Player honour, becoming the youngest player to achieve several of the tournament’s major milestones.

His campaign featured one century and six half-centuries, although the numbers could have been even higher. Suryavanshi was dismissed in the nineties on three occasions, including scores of 93, 96 and 97, narrowly missing additional three-figure innings.

Lalit Modi backs Suryavanshi’s future

Modi’s assessment of the teenager extended beyond statistics and records. Speaking to Wisden, he said, “I am looking forward to that day. Sooryavanshi, you will make 200. I promise you. Don’t let money get into your head. You will become the number one superstar on the planet, bigger than any Hollywood or Bollywood star. Don’t let anybody tell you anything. Play with your heart. You will beat my good friend Chris Gayle, whose bat I have on my wall downstairs.”

The comments add to growing recognition from across the cricket world, with several former players and leading figures praising Suryavanshi’s performances throughout the season.

Attention turns to the next stage

Beyond the run-scoring feats, Suryavanshi’s ability to handle pressure and expectations attracted significant attention during the tournament. His performances helped fuel discussion around a potential India call-up, while his maturity at the crease often stood out as much as his power-hitting.

With an India A one-day tri-series expected to be his next assignment, focus is now shifting towards how quickly one of Indian cricket’s brightest young prospects can translate his domestic success onto the international stage.
