MS Dhoni keeps IPL retirement suspense alive: “I can play for 5 more years”

The CSK legend remains non-committal about his future, saying he feels fit enough to continue — while assuring fans the franchise will be “quite sorted” next season.

MS Dhoni has once again kept cricket fans guessing about his IPL retirement, suggesting at an event in Chennai that he may still have several seasons left — even as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) prepare for major changes after a second straight disappointing IPL campaign.

“I just got a tick mark that I can play cricket for the next five years. But the catch is that I have been given clearance only for eyesight. I need clearance for my body as well. I cannot play cricket just with my eyes (laughs),” said Dhoni, 44, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter and long-time captain of CSK.

Dhoni continues to dodge retirement decision

While fans anticipated clarity after the IPL 2025 season, Dhoni’s comments — both humorous and cryptic — did little to settle the speculation. He had previously stated his return would depend on his physical recovery, but no official announcement has followed.

The ongoing uncertainty leaves open the possibility of Dhoni returning for IPL 2026, even as he edges deeper into his 40s.

CSK performance dips, Dhoni acknowledges need for change

Dhoni was more direct when discussing CSK’s recent struggles. After failing to make the playoffs in both 2024 and 2025, the five-time champions finished bottom of the table this year with just 4 wins in 14 matches.

“Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong?” Dhoni said, reflecting on CSK’s decline.

Mini-auction could trigger squad overhaul

With the IPL mini-auction scheduled for December, Dhoni hinted at tactical changes: “I won’t say we slacked off. But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in.”

The statement signals CSK’s intent to rebuild its core and address issues that have emerged in the past two seasons.

Batting struggles eased by Gaikwad’s return

One of the key problem areas has been CSK’s batting order, which faltered repeatedly throughout IPL 2025. But Dhoni expressed optimism, especially with the expected return of top-order batter Ruturaj Gaikwad.

“We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now,” said Dhoni, signaling Gaikwad’s continued importance to the franchise.

Legacy doesn’t guarantee respect, says Dhoni

Despite CSK’s success over the years, Dhoni emphasized the need for constant reinvention, warning against complacency.

“You always have to be at your best. It is not about what you have done in the past 15 or 16 years. The next year you turn up again, you have to start from there. Nobody respects what you did in the past,” he said.

What’s next for MS Dhoni and CSK?

With no formal announcement on his retirement, speculation around Dhoni’s future in the IPL will likely continue through the off-season. Meanwhile, CSK must focus on rebuilding its squad and regaining its competitive edge.

Whether or not Dhoni takes the field in 2026, his message is clear: legacy means little without current performance, and CSK must rise to meet the standard.
