MS Dhoni’s transition, Pathirana’s farewell, and a new CSK era take shape — Uthappa, Kumble, Mukund weigh in on reset

A new direction takes hold at CSK

The IPL 2026 mini-auction has done more than reshape Chennai Super Kings’ roster — it has pushed the franchise into unfamiliar territory. Long defined by experience and loyalty, CSK now appears fully committed to rebuilding with youth and fresh leadership at the core.

This evolution comes at a moment when questions around MS Dhoni’s future are again front and center. The franchise’s shift has been coming in phases, but now, it feels like a turning point.

Speaking on JioHotstar’s TATA IPL Auction Review show, Robin Uthappa observed, “I don’t think his (Dhoni’s) role changes dramatically because this transition has been ongoing for a while. Ever since the captaincy returned to him from Ravindra Jadeja, you could see that he’s been gradually shifting responsibility year after year. Each season, more responsibility has moved towards Ruturaj Gaikwad. When you look at this squad now, it genuinely feels like the right time for Dhoni to step away, because many of these players were literally kids when he first started playing the IPL. From here, CSK will need to identify a core from within this group and build forward.”

Young players headline a bold auction strategy

CSK’s auction picks reflected a complete break from their previous template. The team shelled out ₹14.2 crore (approx. US$ 1.6M) each for two uncapped players — 19-year-old Kartik Sharma and 20-year-old Prashant Veer. Both were originally listed at a base price of ₹30 lakh (approx. US$ 33.2K).

This youth-first approach marked a rare departure for a franchise that has historically prioritized experience.

Anil Kumble, also speaking on JioHotstar’s auction review show, noted, “This is a total shift from CSK’s usual practice of backing seasoned players, whether Indian or overseas, rather than uncapped talent. In the past, there were uncapped players in the squad who stayed for multiple seasons but didn’t always get opportunities. This time, they’ve completely revamped that approach. The pressure will certainly be on the captain. Ruturaj Gaikwad will have to lead from the front, along with an experienced batter like Sanju Samson at the top of the order. These two will need to steady the ship early on. Someone like Shivam Dube will be key in managing the middle overs, along with MS Dhoni. It won’t be easy; this is a young group. In the IPL, if it comes off, you could be scoring 200 or 250. But if it doesn’t, you could be 40 for five, and that’s where games can change quickly. That said, there is a lot of high-quality young potential in this squad.”

Kartik Sharma’s emotional reaction to CSK bid

The inclusion of Kartik Sharma was one of the emotional highlights of the auction. The youngster was overwhelmed after being picked up by CSK for a massive payday.

“First of all, a special thank you to all my family members & friends, without their support, I don’t think I would have reached this stage. My entire family is very happy, everyone is celebrating and dancing. I’m extremely excited to play alongside Mahendra Singh Dhoni and learn from him. When the bidding started, I was scared I might miss out. But as the bid kept going up, I started crying. Even after it ended, I couldn’t stop. I was overwhelmed with emotion and happiness, I honestly don’t know how to put it into words,” said Kartik Sharma on JioHotstar’s TATA IPL Auction Review.

Pathirana says goodbye with heartfelt message

While young players enter the CSK fold, one popular name has departed. Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana was released and picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹18 crore (approx. US$ 2M).

His farewell note on Instagram reflected a deep personal connection to the franchise.

“From a boy with a dream to wearing yellow with pride. CSK gave me more than just cricket it gave me belief, confidence, and a family I will always cherish. From 2022 till the end of 2025, every moment in yellow shaped me as a cricketer and as a person. I always wanted to finish my last season with CSK on a special note, to give my best till the end and reach 50 wickets for this incredible franchise. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make that happen, but the dream and the effort were always from the heart.”

He also expressed gratitude to the leadership and fans: “I am forever grateful to Dhoni bhai for the guidance and trust, Kasi sir and the management for believing in me, my teammates for standing by me like brothers, and every loyal CSK fan who supported me through every high and low. Your love meant everything to me.”

And with that, he turned the page: “Chennai will always have a special place in my heart. Chennai will always feel like home, and yellow will always have a special place in my heart. With respect, gratitude, and pride, I now turn the page and begin a new chapter with KKR. Thank you CSK. Thank you Chennai. Forever grateful.”

A legacy franchise enters unfamiliar territory

Beyond individual additions or exits, what stands out is the scale of change at CSK. The very identity of the team is shifting — from leadership to squad composition to culture.

JioStar expert Abhinav Mukund summed it up on JioHotstar’s TATA IPL Auction Review: “I think CSK have put together a pretty solid side. Their retentions earlier were always based on what had worked for them in the past, but now everything is out of the window. For 2026, it’s almost like a 30% investment in wicketkeepers. They now have one from every decade — one in his teens, one in his 20s, one in his 30s and one in his 40s. On a serious note, this is a complete reset for CSK. Just imagine the number of meetings they must have had before arriving at these decisions, because this is a legacy franchise built on one system, one belief, and strong player loyalty. Every player who has represented CSK has spoken about how much they love the environment. Now, there are players who have never experienced that system and are coming into it for the first time. This is a huge shift, a tectonic shift in CSK’s approach. This doesn’t look like the CSK team we’re used to seeing, with overseas openers, an international all-rounder in the middle, and a tall overseas fast bowler from Australia or South Africa. This is a very different CSK side.”

As the 2026 season approaches, CSK faces a rare moment in its storied history — not just of change, but reinvention.
