Mumbai Indians have dismissed speculation that Rohit Sharma is set to return as Captain for IPL 2027, with franchise sources confirming that no internal discussions have yet taken place over the team’s leadership for next season, according to an exclusive report by NDTV.
The clarification follows a report by Sports Tak suggesting that Mumbai Indians‘ management was preparing to restore Rohit to the captaincy after three seasons under Hardik Pandya. The latest information, however, indicates that the franchise has not begun deliberations over who will lead the side in 2027.
Hardik Pandya’s future remains open
Although Mumbai Indians have ruled out the reported captaincy discussions, the franchise is exploring the possibility of trading Hardik and is willing to consider proposals from other IPL teams.
No suitable agreement has been identified so far, leaving the all-rounder’s future with Mumbai unresolved. Hardik remains part of the franchise’s squad ahead of the November 15 player retention deadline.
Hardik returned to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2024, having previously captained Gujarat to the title in 2022. His appointment as Mumbai Captain marked the end of Rohit’s long tenure in charge and attracted considerable criticism from sections of the franchise’s supporters.
Results under Hardik have been inconsistent. Mumbai finished bottom of the table in 2024, progressed to Qualifier 2 in 2025 and ended the 2026 season in ninth place.
Mumbai Indians have several leadership options
If Hardik leaves, Mumbai Indians have alternative candidates within their existing squad, with Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma identified as the leading options. New Zealand white-ball Captain Mitchell Santner is also among those under consideration.
Suryakumar has previously stepped in as Mumbai Captain during Hardik’s absence and led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title. He subsequently lost both his position as India’s T20I Captain and his place in the national side.
Tilak, meanwhile, has developed leadership experience with Hyderabad, South Zone and India A. He also serves as India’s T20I Vice-Captain, while Santner brings international captaincy experience from his role leading New Zealand’s limited-overs teams.
Rohit Sharma’s record and Mumbai’s leadership transition
Rohit’s name remains closely associated with Mumbai Indians’ most successful period. He took charge during the 2013 season and led the franchise to five IPL titles, winning the competition in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
His final season as Mumbai Captain came in 2023, when the team reached Qualifier 2 before losing to Hardik’s Gujarat Titans. The subsequent decision to bring Hardik back and appoint him Captain represented a significant change in the franchise’s leadership structure.
Mumbai have not won another IPL title since 2020, and the uncertainty surrounding Hardik’s future has again brought their captaincy plans into focus.
With the November 15 retention deadline approaching, Mumbai Indians must determine their plans for Hardik’s place in the squad, with any potential trade dependent on receiving an acceptable offer from another franchise.
