Mumbai Indians are shaping their plans for IPL 2027 around continuity in their coaching set-up but a potential change at the top of their playing leadership, with Mahela Jayawardene likely to remain as Head Coach and Hardik Pandya potentially staying with the five-time champions without the captaincy.
According to a report by the Times of India, MI are reluctant to make sweeping changes heading into the final season of the current cycle. Jayawardene joined the franchise on a two-plus-one-year arrangement in 2024 and could now receive the additional year, with an announcement expected next month unless the franchise changes course.
The decisions follow a difficult IPL 2026 campaign in which Mumbai finished ninth with four wins. That represented a sharp reversal from 2025, when the franchise reached the playoffs under Jayawardene.
Hardik Pandya could stay as Mumbai Indians change direction
Pandya’s future has been the subject of trade discussions following the 2026 season, with multiple franchises showing interest. However, no deal has progressed sufficiently for his departure to become a certainty, leaving MI open to retaining the all-rounder for another season.
Discussions have taken place between Mumbai and Kolkata Knight Riders, with Cameron Green among the names considered as part of a potential deal. MI, however, have concerns over the Australian all-rounder’s workload next year amid Australia’s Test commitments. Chennai Super Kings could also enter the picture once they have settled their Head Coach position.
A source tracking developments told TimesofIndia.com: “Don’t be surprised if he is not traded at all. Discussions have also happened with the player along these lines. For a trade to happen, multiple things need to fall into place. So it’s not that straightforward.”
While Pandya could remain part of the playing group, MI are reportedly considering moving forward with a different captain. The possibility has already been explored by management, with former MI and India Captain Rohit Sharma involved in discussions around the franchise’s leadership and broader direction.
A return to the captaincy for Rohit has also been considered, but the 39-year-old is not keen to take the role again. Tilak Varma and Jasprit Bumrah are among the potential successors, with Tilak currently emerging as the stronger possibility.
Suryakumar Yadav remains part of MI’s plans
Suryakumar Yadav has also been the subject of speculation after his 2026 campaign, but Mumbai are not looking to move on from the experienced batter on the basis of one difficult season.
The source added: “Yes, he didn’t have a good season last year, but what about the ones before that? MI will not discard a player based on one season, and that’s not how they operate. They take pride in the ‘One Family’ tag and swear by it.”
The approach leaves captaincy as the most significant change currently under consideration while MI otherwise lean towards maintaining the core of their existing set-up for 2027. A more extensive reset could instead become an option when the next IPL cycle begins.
Pandya’s India return faces fresh fitness uncertainty
Away from his Mumbai Indians future, Pandya’s prospective return to international cricket has encountered another setback during his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. The 32-year-old had been progressing towards a comeback but has paused bowling after experiencing discomfort in his leg.
A source tracking developments told TimesofIndia.com: “Hardik Pandya was operating at full intensity without any discomfort but he has been advised to pause bowling due to discomfort in the leg. He will resume soon, but the Afghanistan series is too close to reach the required fitness levels. Batting and movement-wise, there wasn’t any significant issue, but the CoE needs to be completely convinced before giving an all-clear.”
Pandya has not played a competitive match since representing Mumbai Indians on May 24, while his most recent India appearance came in the T20 World Cup final on March 8. He subsequently missed India’s white-ball assignments against Afghanistan and tours of Ireland and England.
His latest issue follows an earlier setback ahead of the ODI series against Afghanistan, when a low-grade quadriceps sprain interrupted his recovery despite his progress in training.
India have now named their squad for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, beginning September 13 in New Delhi, with Pandya not included. Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana have been selected subject to fitness clearance.
