Ahmedabad emerges as frontrunner for 2026 T20 World Cup final

The iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has been shortlisted to host the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, according to a report by The Indian Express. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to announce the official schedule in the coming days, with the tournament set to be staged jointly by India and Sri Lanka in early 2026.

In a recent meeting among top Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials, it was reportedly decided that the 2026 edition would feature fewer host cities compared to the 2023 ODI World Cup, allowing each venue to host a minimum of six matches. The move is aimed at streamlining logistics and ensuring better pitch and venue management throughout the competition.

Key venues confirmed across India and Sri Lanka

The BCCI has proposed five Indian cities — Ahmedabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai — as primary hosts for the tournament. Ahmedabad, which has hosted several major finals in recent years, including the 2023 ODI World Cup and IPL finals, remains the frontrunner for the grand finale. Ahmedabad is also the largest city of Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Ahmedabad’s stadium is named after him. Bengaluru and Lucknow, which featured prominently in the 2023 World Cup, are currently not under consideration for the upcoming T20 edition.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, co-hosting the event, will stage matches at three venues, though the final list of stadiums is yet to be confirmed.

As per the report, venues that hosted matches in the recent ICC Women’s 50-over World Cup — including Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Indore, and Navi Mumbai — will not be part of the men’s tournament.

India-Pakistan match and neutral venue policy

The upcoming T20 World Cup will once again see the India–Pakistan clash being held at a neutral venue, with Colombo identified as the host city for the high-voltage encounter. This arrangement follows the hybrid model previously agreed upon by the BCCI and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), under which the two teams do not play in each other’s countries for ICC or bilateral events.

According to the report, the ICC has also informed the Indian board that if Sri Lanka qualifies for the semi-finals, their match will be played in Colombo. In the event that Pakistan reaches the final, the championship match would also be staged at a neutral venue in line with existing diplomatic agreements.

This model was formalized ahead of the Champions Trophy and will remain in effect at least until 2031, ensuring that fixtures involving India and Pakistan take place on neutral grounds.

Tournament schedule and outlook

The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to begin in early February and conclude with the final roughly a month later. The BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have reportedly already submitted the proposed schedule to the ICC, with an official announcement expected soon.

With India entering the competition as defending champions, anticipation is high for another blockbuster edition of the tournament, which will feature 20 teams and a mix of established and emerging cricketing nations.

The Narendra Modi Stadium, renowned for its capacity and state-of-the-art facilities, is poised to once again take center stage — reaffirming its reputation as a premier venue for global cricket showpieces.
