Cricket Australia optimistic about Pakistani players’ BBL participation
Cricket Australia (CA) remains hopeful that the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) sudden freeze on overseas league participation will not prevent key Pakistani players from featuring in the 2025-26 Big Bash League (BBL) season.
BBL clubs had successfully drafted some of Pakistan’s biggest T20 names for the upcoming season, including Babar Azam (Sydney Sixers), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Brisbane Heat), and Mohammad Rizwan (Melbourne Renegades). However, on September 29, the PCB issued an official notification suspending all player NOCs for international franchise competitions.
“With the approval of Chairman PCB, all No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for players with respect to participation in leagues and other out-of-country tournaments are hereby put on hold until further orders,” stated Sumair Ahmad Syed, Chief Operating Officer of the PCB, in the formal notice.
The move came just a day after Pakistan’s narrow loss to India in the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup final and has not yet been explained publicly by the board. No timeline for lifting the suspension has been offered, and uncertainty remains about whether exceptions will be granted.
Greenberg confident of resolution with PCB
Despite the PCB’s sudden move, Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg is optimistic that a resolution is possible and that the Pakistani stars will still suit up for the BBL this summer.
“We’ve been in contact with our colleagues at the PCB over the last few days, we’re hopeful we can find a resolution,” Todd Greenberg was quoted as saying by News Wire.
“We’re really looking forward to welcoming their players to the Big Bash, we think they’ll add great value … it will be a fascinating summer across the BBL, yeah.”
The sudden unavailability of Pakistan players would be a significant setback for the league, especially after a successful draft in which their selection was widely celebrated by both clubs and fans. Greenberg’s continued dialogue with PCB officials suggests that negotiations are still underway.
David Hussey hails impact of Pakistani players on BBL
The value of Pakistani cricketers to the BBL has also been publicly acknowledged by former Australian cricketer and BBL veteran David Hussey. Speaking amid growing uncertainty around player participation, Hussey emphasized the critical role of Pakistani stars in boosting the league’s profile.
“The standard of the Big Bash League will go to a new level because of Pakistan cricketers,” Hussey was quoted as saying by ProPakistani.pk.
He pointed to the global stature of Pakistan’s T20 specialists, their crowd-pulling power, and their proven match-winning credentials as reasons for their growing importance in major franchise leagues. With Babar, Rizwan, and Shaheen all lined up to make their BBL debuts this season, anticipation remains high among fans in both Australia and Pakistan.
Ashwin signing adds another layer of star power
While uncertainty looms over the participation of Pakistan’s top players, the BBL received a boost of its own with the recent announcement of Ravichandran Ashwin’s signing by Sydney Thunder.
Greenberg dismissed concerns about Ashwin joining the league post-draft and clarified that all clubs had equal opportunity to engage him.
“We’ve found provisions where we can make that work and all the clubs had equal opportunity to engage with him,” Greenberg said, speaking on Ashwin’s signing.
“It’s a big moment for the BBL to welcome Ravi here, I have been talking to him personally on a number of occasions.”
“I have found him a breath of fresh air, I think our fans are going to really enjoy watching him play and engaging with him when he’s here for the BBL.”
“He will probably and very likely draw a crowd bigger than (23,000, ENGIE Stadium’s capacity), but he’s got quite a few away games in some big stadiums, too.”
“I don’t think we’re going to be short of people wanting to come and watch him play, that’s for sure.”
The arrival of Ashwin and the potential inclusion of Pakistan’s biggest names hint at a blockbuster BBL season ahead—if Cricket Australia and the PCB can reach a timely resolution.
What’s next for BBL and PCB negotiations?
As the BBL countdown begins, all eyes remain on the PCB and whether it will reverse or soften its NOC policy in time for the tournament. For Cricket Australia, securing these Pakistani stars is not just about filling rosters, but about maintaining the global competitiveness and marketability of the league.
The next few weeks will be critical in determining the final player list, but Greenberg’s public reassurances—and strong endorsements from former players like Hussey—signal that efforts are ongoing behind the scenes to bring all contracted talent to Australia this summer.
