South Africa’s Test team has recruited former England fast bowler Stuart Broad to assist with preparations for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia, set to take place at Lord’s next week.

The move is designed to leverage Broad’s deep knowledge of Lord’s conditions and his experience playing against Australia. Broad will link up with the Proteas camp on June 9, just two days before the marquee match begins on June 11.

Stuart Broad brings elite Test pedigree and Lord’s experience

Broad enjoyed a decorated international career, claiming 604 wickets in 167 Test matches. He is second only to James Anderson on England’s all-time Test wicket-takers list and remains the leading wicket-taker against Australia, having dismissed their batters 153 times.

At Lord’s specifically, Broad’s track record is unmatched. He played 28 Tests at the historic ground and took 113 wickets, a testament to his mastery of the unique slope and pitch characteristics.

Infamously cast as a pantomime villain in Ashes history — most notably when he stood his ground after edging to slip at Trent Bridge in 2013 — Broad has long thrived on the intensity of matches against Australia.

Proteas fast bowlers to benefit from Broad’s insights

Broad will work directly with Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Dane Paterson, Lungi Ngidi, Wiaan Mulder and Corbin Bosch, sharing tactical and technical guidance just days before the final.

He will also reunite with Proteas Test batting coach Ashwell Prince, with whom he has shared commentary duties on the Betway SA20 broadcast in recent seasons. Broad’s technical breakdowns have become a key part of the SuperSport coverage, showcasing his ability to communicate high-level cricketing concepts effectively.

Proteas warm up with Zimbabwe before WTC showdown

Before the final, the Proteas face Zimbabwe in a warm-up game on June 3 at Arundel Castle Cricket Ground in Sussex, their final tune-up before the high-stakes clash with Australia.

With a young pace unit and one of the toughest opponents in world cricket on deck, the addition of Stuart Broad’s Lord’s-specific expertise could prove to be a strategic masterstroke.
