The PSL administration has defended restrictions on marquee-player recruitment and retained key deadlines following a workshop with franchise representatives ahead of the 2027 season.

Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises have failed in their bid to ease restrictions on direct player signings ahead of PSL 12, with league officials deciding to retain the existing eligibility criteria despite objections raised during a workshop on October 29, according to a report by Geo Super.

The decision means all eight franchises will be limited to directly recruiting one marquee player who did not participate in either of the previous two PSL seasons. The November 23 signing deadline will also remain in place as preparations continue for the 2027 tournament.

The workshop brought together PSL administration officials and franchise representatives to address player recruitment regulations, retention deadlines, tournament operations and scheduling. While several proposals were discussed, the league maintained its position on the principal recruitment restrictions.

PSL administration defends marquee-player eligibility rule

Some franchises sought the removal of the requirement that direct signings must involve players who did not feature in PSL 10 or PSL 11.

According to the report, the PSL administration opposed the proposal on the grounds that the restriction was designed to attract new players to the competition through the direct-signing mechanism.

The policy allows each franchise to recruit one marquee player outside the auction process, subject to the eligibility condition.

With the restriction remaining intact, franchises will need to identify suitable players who meet the criteria before the direct-signing window closes on November 23, 2026.

The PSL administration is also expected to brief franchises on marquee-player options as they prepare their recruitment plans.

Player retention and auction deadlines remain unchanged

The workshop also addressed the timetable for retaining existing players ahead of the next season.

Some franchises proposed bringing forward the player retention deadline, but PSL officials defended the existing January 13, 2027 date.

The administration’s position was linked to the National T20 tournament, with the deadline intended to give franchises an opportunity to evaluate players’ performances before finalising their retention decisions.

Meanwhile, the PSL 12 player auction will proceed as scheduled on January 23, 2027, with no changes agreed during the workshop.

The auction will be the second in the league’s history after the PSL moved away from its traditional player draft system for the 2026 season.

Separate franchise consultations planned on PSL 12 schedule

Although tournament scheduling formed part of the workshop discussions, the PSL administration decided to consult franchises individually on the matter.

The overall competition window has already been established, with PSL 12 scheduled to run from March 18 to May 2, 2027.

Those dates were agreed following consultations with franchise owners and representatives at the PSL Governing Council meeting held in London on September 1, 2026.

The separate discussions will take place within the broader preparations for the eight-team tournament, although no further scheduling decisions were detailed in the report.

PSL 12 follows major changes to league structure

The upcoming edition will be the second PSL season featuring eight franchises, following the competition’s expansion from six teams in 2026.

That expansion coincided with a significant change to the league’s recruitment model, as the inaugural PSL player auction replaced the draft system used in previous seasons.

PSL 11 also established a new attendance record for the competition’s final, with 32,461 spectators watching the championship match at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on May 3, 2026.

Peshawar Zalmi defeated debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen by five wickets to secure their first PSL title in nine years.

The next major recruitment milestone for PSL 12 is the November 23 direct-signing deadline, followed by player retentions on January 13 and the auction on January 23, 2027.
