Rahul Dravid: Young cricketers must grow as people to unlock their true potential

Rahul Dravid, Head Coach of the Rajasthan Royals, has stressed the vital role of self-awareness and personal development in a cricketer’s journey, emphasizing that understanding oneself off the field is as important as technical excellence on it.

Speaking on a recent episode of JioHotstar’s Halla Bol, Dravid said: “Just being good at cricket and just practising cricket will of course get you a certain distance. The great players that I have had the privilege of working with—one of the common things I see in all of them is that they truly know who they are as people.”

Dravid’s philosophy on player development

Dravid, who played for the Royals from 2011 to 2013 and later mentored the team until 2015, returned as head coach ahead of the 2025 IPL season. Known for his commitment to youth development, his approach centers around helping players evolve both personally and professionally.

That mindset is evident in the current Rajasthan Royals squad, with youngsters like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi making an impact and Riyan Parag emerging as a leader under Dravid’s mentorship.

If you know who you are and grow as a person, you give yourself the best chance to maximise your potential,” Dravid added. “You need to understand yourself as a person both on and off the field.”

Personal growth over comparisons

A former Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and successful coach of India’s U-19 and senior national teams, Dravid has long advocated for a player-first approach. His focus has consistently been on individual journeys rather than comparison-based metrics.

It’s individual. You can’t compare yourself with other people. Your job is to get the best out of yourself and the gifts you have been given – and that comes from growing as a cricketer and as a person,” he explained.

This ethos of investing in potential and nurturing it into performance has become a defining trait of the Royals’ culture under Dravid’s leadership, shaping not just players’ careers but also their personal trajectories.
