Ravichandran Ashwin’s future with the Chennai Super Kings is uncertain heading into IPL 2026, with the India veteran asking the franchise for clarity on his role. While stressing that he would be open to moving if he no longer fits into their plans, Ashwin made it clear that the next step lies with the team’s management.

Speaking on his YouTube show, Ashwin drew on his past experiences to explain why communication between a player and a franchise is essential.

“I played three years for RR. After my 1st year, I got an email from the CEO saying this is your performance, this is our expectation and we’re renewing your contract. It’s one plus one plus one – the contract renewal. After every season, it’s the responsibility of the franchise to communicate to the player if they’re retaining or releasing him.

“With regard to news about me or Sanju – obviously a player has the right to express interest [if he wishes to be retained or no]. Every player seeks clarity. As things stand, it’s not in my hands. I’ve just asked for clarity. The situation we’re in, all the news floating around, none of it is coming from the players. Even with Sanju’s news, it’s rumours or it’s coming from the franchise’s side. I don’t know who is making this news.”

A challenging year in yellow

Ashwin was bought by CSK at the IPL 2025 mega auction for ₹9.75 crore, marking a homecoming after eight seasons away. However, his return saw limited on-field action, with only nine appearances in 14 matches — his lowest game tally since his debut season in 2009. It was also statistically a tough year, as he conceded runs at 9.12 per over, his highest economy rate in the league.

Ashwin’s situation comes as CSK weigh several other key decisions, including the captaincy. MS Dhoni stepped in mid-season after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury, but the franchise named Gaikwad as skipper for 2025 even with Dhoni in the squad — a scenario likely to repeat next season if both are available.

Timing and trade possibilities

The timeline for releasing or retaining players depends on the auction date, which has yet to be confirmed for 2026. The IPL’s mega auction takes place every three years, with smaller auctions held annually between November and February.

If Ashwin and CSK do part ways, a trade could happen up to one week before the auction — a mechanism the spinner himself has referenced in conversations with other players, such as Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson.

A decorated IPL career

Ashwin remains the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history. His career has taken him from his initial stint with CSK to the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals before returning to Chennai in 2025.

Whether he continues that journey in familiar yellow or takes on a fresh challenge could be one of the off-season’s most intriguing storylines.
