Pakistan’s white-ball captain seeks clarity on selection decisions and greater role in team strategy
Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s ODI and T20I captain, is reportedly preparing for a high-level meeting with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi following his surprise exclusion from the T20I squad for the recent series in New Zealand.
According to Telecom Asia Sport, Rizwan and Babar Azam were left out of the five-match T20I series without direct explanation, prompting the duo to request clarification about their future roles in the format.
Rizwan demands more influence—or may step down
Sources close to the situation claim that Rizwan is frustrated not only with the omission, but with what he perceives as a lack of authority in decision-making as captain. A source stated, “Rizwan will seek more power in the selection of the playing eleven for the match, and there is a possibility that if not given full power, then he might resign from ODI captaincy.”
Rizwan’s concerns highlight a growing divide between leadership roles and selection autonomy within the current setup, especially with no permanent head coach in place.
Disagreements with Aaqib Javed over ODI strategy
Tensions have reportedly flared between Rizwan and interim head coach Aaqib Javed during the recent ODI series against New Zealand. Rizwan is said to have pushed for a five-bowler strategy, but the team fielded just four specialists—relying on part-timers Salman Agha and Irfan Khan, who conceded 118 runs between them.
The disagreement over team balance adds fuel to Rizwan’s demands for greater say in on-field decisions, particularly around team composition.
Coaching search and next steps
The Pakistan Cricket Board is currently in discussions with both foreign coaches and former Pakistani players as it looks to appoint a permanent head coach. With the Pakistan Super League (PSL) running through May 18, Rizwan is reportedly eager to resolve these issues before Pakistan hosts Bangladesh for a five-match T20I series.
As the situation unfolds, Rizwan’s leadership and the PCB’s handling of internal dynamics will be under close scrutiny—particularly with the T20 World Cup later this year. A resignation from Rizwan would signal deeper structural issues within Pakistan cricket at a critical time.
