A defining knock quiets retirement debate
At a time when questions were being asked about his rhythm and longevity, Rohit Sharma delivered a defining reminder of his class in Sydney. His unbeaten 121 in the third ODI did not change the result of the series — which India lost 2-1 — but it helped the visitors avoid a whitewash and further cemented his status as one of the greats of the modern era. The innings also brought up his 50th international century, a moment that drew a roaring ovation as he and Virat Kohli shared a 168‑run stand in what may have been one of their final outings together on Australian soil.
With 202 runs across three matches, Sharma finished as the leading scorer of the series and was named Player of the Series, turning scrutiny into admiration within the space of a week.
Childhood coach outlines retirement plan
Speaking to ANI, Rohit’s longtime mentor Dinesh Lad expressed immense pride in the match‑winning knock and revealed when his student plans to walk away from international cricket.
“The way Rohit batted today and how he contributed to India’s win it felt great to watch today’s match. He will play the 2027 ODI World Cup and retire after that,” Lad said.
Lad also praised Kohli’s own return to form, referencing a prophecy once made by Sachin Tendulkar about the duo.
“There are misunderstandings about Virat every day. He is someone who can thrive anytime and anywhere. The way he played today, it feels good. Sachin had said in a function way back that Rohit and Virat would be the players who would break his records. Both getting closer to his records feels really good,” he added.
Self‑belief driving the final chapter
Lad, speaking separately to PTI videos, stressed that Rohit’s desire to continue at the highest level stems from his unwavering belief in his own ability.
“This is a special moment. There were talks that he was not performing, that he should stop playing cricket, but he played two good innings in the last two matches, 75 (97) first and now 121* (125), and has shown he is still a top player who’ll still contribute to the country”
“The only secret is his self-confidence. That’s why he hasn’t retired. He wants to play the 2027 World Cup and only retire after that, and he’s preparing for that.”
No rift — only mutual respect and legacy
The Sydney partnership also rekindled questions around the off‑field relationship between Rohit and Kohli — something Lad was quick to address.
“There were a lot of ugly talks about Virat… But I had said that he’d perform. Both did well. I want to see them play the 2027 World Cup… Many said there was friction between Rohit and Virat, but that’s not true; they are close friends and play for the nation,” he told PTI videos.
As India prepare for their home series against South Africa later this month, attention will be fixed not on how much time Rohit Sharma has left — but on the legacy he and Kohli continue to build together.
