Bangladesh could soon see the return of one of its most influential cricketers.
Shakib Al Hasan is expected to rejoin national cricket in the near future as efforts continue to clear legal and administrative hurdles surrounding his participation, Bangladesh Cricket Board Director Asif Akbar indicated while attending the prize-giving ceremony of the Young Tigers Under-18 National Cricket Tournament 2025–2026 at Cox’s Bazar International Cricket Stadium.
BCB optimistic about Shakib Al Hasan’s return to national cricket
Speaking at the event, Akbar expressed confidence that the veteran all-rounder’s comeback is approaching.
“We are hopeful that he will be back on the field very soon,” he said.
Discussions about Shakib’s return have intensified in recent weeks, with speculation over when the former Bangladesh captain could next represent the national side. While some reports had suggested the upcoming Pakistan series as a possible target, recent indications from the board suggest a slightly different timeline.
“He will come, InshaAllah, very soon. When he will complete the fitness and selection rounds…he is currently giving more priority to the New Zealand tour,” Akbar said.
That timeline points to Bangladesh’s tour of New Zealand as a more realistic window for the all-rounder’s return, provided he completes the necessary fitness assessments and selection procedures.
Legal coordination between BCB and sports ministry underway
Behind the scenes, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has been working alongside government authorities to resolve the issues that have complicated Shakib’s path back to competitive cricket.
“The BCB is continuing its work regarding Shakib’s matter. The issue has now been forwarded from the board to the ministry. The BCB’s legal aid team is also working closely with the ministry to resolve the complications,” Akbar said.
The coordination between the board and the Ministry of Youth and Sports is aimed at addressing the legal challenges that have delayed the veteran’s return to the national setup.
Cox’s Bazar cricket infrastructure still under development
Akbar also used the occasion to discuss the future development of cricket facilities in Cox’s Bazar, where the Under-18 national tournament concluded.
The board has outlined plans to transform the venue into a more comprehensive international-standard complex with improved infrastructure and hospitality options.
“We envision a modern stadium with park and five-star hotel facilities,” he said.
However, Akbar acknowledged that several upgrades are still required before the venue can host major international fixtures.
“Now, galleries and infrastructure required for hosting major matches are lacking.”
The event was also attended by BCB Game Development Operations Head Qazi Habibul Bashar Sumon and BCB Selector Mehrab Hossain Opi, as the board continues its efforts to strengthen both elite and grassroots cricket structures across Bangladesh.
