Sir Vivian Richards inspires West Indies Academy with legacy session on mindset, pride, and champion spirit
St John’s, Antigua — Cricket West Indies (CWI) welcomed cricketing legend Sir Vivian Richards for a powerful and emotional Legacy Session with players from the West Indies Academy on Thursday, 31 July. The event was part of CWI’s broader effort to connect the next generation of Caribbean talent with the region’s rich cricketing heritage.
Sir Viv, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in cricket history, delivered a passionate talk on what it means to wear the maroon — not just as a uniform, but as a symbol of unity, sacrifice, and fearless ambition. His presentation focused on the mindset of champions, drawing from his experience during the Golden Era of West Indies cricket (1976–1995).
Drawing lessons from the Golden Era of West Indies dominance
This session formed Part 3 of the CWI History of West Indies Cricket/Legacy Sessions program, which specifically highlights achievements from the West Indies’ unparalleled 15-year unbeaten Test series streak (1980–1995), and back-to-back World Cup victories in 1975 and 1979.
Sir Viv’s era as captain (1984–1991) featured bold and fearless cricket, powered by legendary teammates such as Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, and Courtney Walsh. Speaking candidly, Richards emphasized that it was not just skill, but togetherness and collective belief that enabled their domination of world cricket.
“It was about pride, mindset, and knowing what the maroon meant to all of us as Caribbean men,” Sir Viv shared with the Academy players.
Legacy Sessions shaping the next generation
The Legacy Sessions initiative is a key element of CWI’s elite player development strategy, ensuring that young players receive both technical training and cultural grounding. Previous sessions earlier this year featured Sir Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, who both spoke about resilience and the evolution of fast bowling in West Indies cricket.
The July session also featured remarks from Andy “Job” Christian, one of Antigua’s top all-round athletes and a longtime friend of Sir Viv. Christian, who represented Antigua in track and field, football, and basketball, spoke about the pride of representing the region and urged players to understand the broader impact of their careers.
Connecting past glory with future potential
These Legacy Sessions are designed not just to educate but to inspire a sense of duty and pride in West Indies Academy players. By engaging with legendary figures like Sir Viv, players are reminded of the responsibility and opportunity that comes with playing for the West Indies — a team with a legacy forged through excellence, adversity, and unmatched global respect.
Cricket West Indies continues to invest in holistic development initiatives that emphasize not only skills on the field but the character, discipline, and historical perspective required to excel at the highest level.
