Team visits CSA headquarters after airport reception
According to multiple reports, the team traveled directly from the airport to Cricket South Africa’s head office. Having just experienced an emotional reception from thousands of fans—something Bavuma later described as unlike anything they had seen before—the captain addressed the media at a press conference, reflecting on the magnitude of the victory and the overwhelming fan response.
Bavuma: ‘We’ve made our people proud’
Speaking to reporters, Bavuma captured the emotion of the moment:
“It is quite overwhelming. We haven’t seen people like that at the airport before. As players, you don’t really realise what you’ve done but when you start to interact with people and see the emotion, it gives you a proper insight into what we’ve done. We are proud as a team but we are even more happy and proud that we’ve made our people proud.”
He also emphasized the identity and unity that defined the team’s journey:
“If you look at this team and the guys at the helm, we have done it the proper South African way. That’s unique to this group. We have embraced everything that it means to be South African.”
Conrad: ‘It’s finally sinking in’
Test coach Shukri Conrad also addressed the press and shared his reaction:
“We had wonderful support in England, but this is just unreal. I think it’s finally sinking in that we are the world Test champions.”
A championship built on resilience
South Africa’s five-wicket win over defending champions Australia ended a 27-year wait for an ICC trophy. The last time the Proteas lifted a major international title was in 1998, when they won the Champions Trophy.

The WTC Final saw standout performances from Aiden Markram, who scored a match-winning 136 and earned Player of the Match honors, and Bavuma, who anchored the chase with a gritty 66. Kagiso Rabada led the bowling attack with nine wickets, supported by Lungi Ngidi’s crucial spells.
The championship capped an impressive WTC cycle for South Africa, marked by consistency, depth, and teamwork. Over the course of the campaign, nine different players won Player of the Match awards, and 15 players either scored centuries or took five-wicket hauls.
Beyond cricket: a unifying moment
For a country still wrestling with social divisions, the Proteas’ triumph resonated far beyond the boundary ropes. From rural fans to elite cricket academies, from township streets to boardrooms, South Africans rallied around a team that proudly reflected the nation’s diversity and spirit.
This victory was not just about cricket—it was about rewriting the narrative of South African sport, finally shedding the weight of past heartbreaks and embracing a new era of possibility.
